Susan's family is sad to announce her passing after a long and courageous fight against dementia and cancer. She passed away in her home of 40 years, surrounded by her immediate family. Born in Victoria, Sue attended Norfolk House School, being chosen Head Girl in her final year. She earned a Bachelor's of Arts with Honours at the University of Victoria, spending a year in England and Europe before returning to Victoria. She met her future husband, John, volunteering backstage at Langham Court Theatre. Susan returned to UVIC, earning her Masters of Public Administration and launching her career in the BC Civil Service. Over the next 27 years Susan worked in many levels government and was involved in policy making, legislation and strategic planning. She earned many distinctions for her service. Susan's most devoted and cherished role, however, was mom of her two children, and always shared in their lives.
After retiring, Susan began to experience odd visual sensations. After much research she self-diagnosed as having a rare form of dementia, posterior cortical atrophy (PCA), with the diagnosis being confirmed by a neurologist in 2011. Valuing the importance of community, Susan sought out support in an online group for those with PCA, discovering the power of social media to connect people. This lead to her co-founding Dementia Alliance International (DAI), an international advocacy and support organization run by people with dementia, acting as the global voice for those with the disease. Susan was a valued member of the board, sharing the skills and knowledge she gained in her career to help DAI develop. In 2018, Susan was diagnosed with a rare late-stage cancer. Despite both diagnoses, she continued to live her life to the fullest, enjoying running, walking, playing drums, traveling and spending time with family and friends. Above all else Susan found the most joy and pride in her family, especially her two children and grandchildren, whom she loved without bounds.
Susan was predeceased by her parents Hugh (2002) and Barbara (2011), and brother Michael (2019). She is survived by her partner and husband of 50 years, John, children Megan (Geoff) and James, grandchildren Briallan and Macsen, brother Dave (Astrid), nieces Miranda and Samantha, and nephews David and Glynn. Susan will be sadly missed by her family and friends, and all the communities that she was a part of. She will be remembered for her kindness, wit, generosity, strength and love of her family.
There will be a private family celebration. Donations in Susan's memory can be made to Dementia Alliance International
