Thomas Dingle Obituary

With sadness for our loss and with gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the death of Tom Dingle on August 22, 2022.
Tom was born on August 6, 1936 in Burnaby, BC. Tom is survived by Florence, his wife of 59 years, his daughter Hilary (Steve), his son Gregory (Alice) and granddaughter Jane. He is also survived by his sister Rosemary Poole, brother Philip (Donna) and sister-in-law Joanne Young. He was predeceased by parents Mabel and Walter Dingle, and brother Howard.
As a child, Tom traveled up and down the Americas with his family following his father's job as a surveyor for Imperial Oil. He lived in such exotic locations as Peru and the Northwest Territories. This provided him a wealth of stories in later life and a global outlook.
From an early age, Tom was an avid student. He loved to read, especially science-fiction. Outdoors, Tom led young scouts on many camping trips, and later did the same for his family.
Tom earned his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He followed it with postdoctoral studies in Oxford, England and Ottawa, Ontario. In 1967, he became a professor of Chemistry at UVic, finally retiring after 35 happy years of research, teaching and lunches with colleagues.
Tom shared his love of science with a love of the arts--music, theatre, dancing and especially opera. Always ready to volunteer, Tom was active with the Peninsula Track and Field Club, the Vancouver Island Athletic Association and BC Athletics. His zest for life, sense of humour, and generosity of time and expertise will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation (http://www.bccancer.bc.ca/donate). A celebration of remembrance will be held between 3 - 5pm on October 24th at the UVic University Club.

I was sorry to hear of Tom's passing and I send my condolences to Florence, Greg and Hilary and all the family. I worked closely with Tom for many years in the instruction of first-year chemistry courses. After his retirement he would sometimes drop by my office for a chat. He will be greatly missed.

So sad to hear of Tom's passing. Tom was the BC Summer Zone 6 Rep (Vancouver Island) for Athletics for many years. Tom was one the of best Zone Reps we had - very well organized and very good at making sure that his Zone utilized the full team complement of athletes and coaches and more. He was such a great guy to work with, always positive, always to quality work - he was amazing! I certainly will miss him.

I am very sorry to read of Tom's passing. I was acquainted with Tom through lower Island athletics. My sons were members of Pacific Athletics Track and Field Club and I spent a few years officating at local Meets. Tom was an ever present figure at the Meets; happy to lend a hand wherever needed and he always made the time to support new volunteers with patience and kindness as we "learned the ropes" in the various running, jumping and throwing events. The provincial track and field community was very fortunate to have Tom generously share his time, energy and experience with young athletes, parents and coaches. I am so sorry for your loss.
