Thomas ELWELL Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tom Elwell, at the age of 69. Tom passed away peacefully, at home, after a short battle with Cancer. He is predeceased by his father Ben Sr. He leaves behind his loving wife Kathy of 46 years and their two daughters Sherri (Tim), Nicole (Jesse) and two grandsons Jordon and Luke, his mother Irene, his brother Ben Jr (Wanda), sister Lori (Kevin) Campbell, along with many cousins and nieces and nephews.

Tom was a true family man and his family meant absolutely everything to him. He was a gifted coach and enjoyed coaching his daughters in softball and soccer. He was most proud of his daughter's Prospect Lake soccer team which he coached for 10 years, together they won many League and Island titles as well as placing 1st, 2nd and third in the BC cup tournaments over the years. Tom enjoyed watching his two grandsons grow, providing them a strong and loving father figure. He also enjoyed working with his wife on their house, creating a warm and welcoming home together.

Tom was born and raised in Victoria, where he met his future wife Kathy, at the age of 18. After graduating from Claremont Senior High School, he became a licensed carpenter and spent most of his working life as a carpenter at Butchart Gardens. Tom played fast ball in his younger years but his true love was soccer. He played for Prospect Lake in his youth and Victoria Athletics well into his senior years, making many lifelong friends. Tom also enjoyed camping at the family cabin at Cowichan Lake and for the past 21 years looked forward to the annual Rathtrevor camping trip with his soccer buddies and their families. Tom was a Tim Horton's regular and enjoyed meeting his many good friends for coffee.

Tom will be well remembered for his kindness and steady demeanour and deeply missed by his family and friends.

Many thanks to Dr. John Jerome, who was always there when Tom needed him and the staff with BC Cancer and Victoria Palliative Care for their care and compassion.

By Tom's request, there will be no service. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallgardens.com. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the BC Cancer Foundation.

You were a kind person,Tom. You always came by to walk to Claremont with me. Our neighborhood friend's always hung out together, playing baseball, touch football, kick the can in the big yard... between GMA Elwell's and the Young's properties. Your laugh was quiet, just like you. I bet you're playing crazy 8's with Mom and some of the other kids from the neighborhood. Rest in peace my friend. Love you always.

Our sincere condolences from Susan and I to you Kathy and to your family.
Tommer was a great schoolmate and team mate for over 20 years on our many soccer, baseball and fastball teams. Our parents and families enjoyed many special events together. I have many fond memories after Laker's games of debriefing, strategizing and shooting the breeze with Tom at the old Royal Oak Inn. Rest in peace Tommer!

My sincere condolences to Kathy, Sherri and Nicole. Such devastating news.

I credit Tom for my lifelong love of soccer and athletics in general. He was such a talented coach. His passion for the game was contagious and inspired all of us to push to be our best. He did all of this with kind patience, all while showing us how to be competitive, and great teammates.

Perseverance, dedication, teamwork, sportsmanship, and resilience.

These skills Tom taught us, I´ve carried through to adulthood. I will be forever grateful for his leadership. He will be missed by so many.

Sending all my love to the Elwell family and the rest of Tom´s Laker Girls. We will cherish the memories.

Tom was one of those guys you always wanted on your team. I had the good fortune to play soccer with Tom at the A's and have fond memories of our time together. He left a positive mark on this world, and hopefully that will be of some solace to his family.

Sending hugs and love to you Kathy, Sherri and Nicole.
I was both proud and lucky to be one of Tom´s `Laker Girls´. His impact started with soccer and building our skills but truly was so much more. Decades later I can still hear his laugh and wise words, see his friendly smile and wink and feel how much he cared about each and every one of us on the team.
Tom´s memory will continue to live on in all of us whom he impacted in such a positive way.

Kathy, Sherri, Nicole and family my heartfelt sympathies for your loss at Tom´s passing. We are so thankful for the time he and you devoted to his team of girls who played together from age 7 to 17. Tom never held try outs, never cut a player, and took a club team to provincials over and over. When they dominated other teams in regular season play he did all he could to even the playing field. It went from 1 to 2 to 3 touch to putting a forward in goal and the goalie up front. He built the confidence in each and every player. Tom enriched our girls´ lives beyond measure.
