Thomas Halbert Obituary

After a lengthy illness Tom passed away peacefully at home his family surrounding him.

Born in Montreal Quebec on September 8, 1924. Tom was raised in Kingston and Sudbury Ontario, the family moved to Victoria in 1936. He served with the Canadian Scottish Regiment in Belgium, Holland and Germany. During one skirmish Tom was captured and held as a Prisoner of War in Germany, before escaping (with some help from the German guards) and returning to his unit. Tom was always proud of his service to our country and would share stories if asked. On his return to Canada after the war Tom attended UBC and obtained a law degree. He then returned to Victoria to practice law for 22 years before being appointed Registrar of the Supreme Court of BC and subsequently becoming the first Master of the Supreme Court of BC. After retiring from the courts Tom returned to private practice, retiring finally in 2010. He was an avid lacrosse player for many years, and was very proud that he was one of the original Foul Bay boys.

Leaves to mourn is wife June of 50 years and children Tom (Donna Bear) and Jennifer, five grand-daughters, Brenna, Aeryn, Zoe, Rhylynn and Greer, sister-in-law Norma Halbert, nieces Connie and Donna Halbert, and great nieces Glynnis and Kendra Morgan, and his loyal dog Oskar. Tom was pre-deceased by his younger brother Bill.

I am sorry to hear, as I just found this notice through the internet. Tom was a wonderful man. I had the good fortune of learning from him both as an Articling Student and then as a young lawyer, while I worked for Donald McKnight and Tom shared offices. His legal knowledge was vast and he was kind enough to help a young lawyer. He spoke often, with tremendous pride, about Tom Jr. and Jennifer. His wife, June, is an absolutely lovely person and I wish her and the family well. Greg Chang, lawyer.

I am saddened to hear of Tom's death.
I remember him as a fellow teammate on the Foul Bay lacrosse team.
Later he did some professional work for me before he went to the courthouse.
We lost track of one another over the years as our career paths diverged but I always valued our early days relationship.
My condolences to the family for their loss of this valued man.
