Thomas Moore Obituary

MOORE, Thomas Allen
Thomas Allen Moore (who went by many nicknames including Al, Allen, and Moore's Maltsters) passed away peacefully May 15th, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Allen was born November 2nd, 1933 in Victoria. He was proud to call himself a true James Bay boy. He grew up with a passion for sports, playing hockey and lacrosse throughout his child and teen years and eventually softball in adulthood.

His love for sports continued throughout his life. He enjoyed his time coaching fastball for Century Inn and Batholomew's at Haywood Park, coaching lacrosse, and the role of referee and chief for the Esquimalt minor hockey association. He was always involved and making an impact with everyone who met him on and off the ice. Even as he aged, he could be frequently spotted at the ball fields with his best friend (JP) as they bickered and laughed with the players.

Allen was also well known for his work. He took pride as a shareholder of Point Hope Shipyards and foreman of the welding department. He worked for Island Tug and Barge, Seaspan, Genstar and Point Hope. He was often referred to as Moore's Maltsters around the yards. His philosophy was getting the job done well, no matter the circumstances, while allowing some fun around the department in between. At the end of the workday, he would be cracking open his beer with the others for a job well done.

Al's family was the center of his world. He loved his wife (Gerry) of 69 years and would want her by his side constantly. He looked forward to camping and road trips with his wife, kids, and friends. Memories from those trips were stories told and cherished to anyone who would listen. Every year, he looked forward to summers camping at Osbourne Bay with Gerry where they could spend days together relaxing in each other's company. He took interest in activities his children got involved in and would continue to make it to major events rain or shine for his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Whether it was a dance recital, a graduation, or a dinner celebration, he was there smiling and catching up with his family.

Allen is survived by his wife Gerry and his sister Maureen. He also leaves behind his children Tom (Maggie), Barb (Rod), and Gary (Linda). Six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren also keep him in their memory.

A service is currently being organized to celebrate Allen's life. Please be aware that a set date has yet to be determined but more information will be available in the coming months.
Rest well Big Al.

My sincere condolences to Al's family on his passing. Being raised in James Bay, I knew of the Moore family but my fond memories of Al began later in Esquimalt when I bowled with him (Gerry and family). I will always appreciate the support he gave me when I was first introduced to umpiring men's softball games, many years ago. I was fortunate to stay connected awhile through his daughter Barb. I will forever remember Al for his smile and humor...and the great times shared at barbecues and social events!

Al the "Malt"as he was known in the steel department at Point Hope was the working man´s boss.
He wanted his jobs done first and then time to play after the job was completed.
Sometimes that didn´t happen with his steel workers and welders but we all enjoyed working for Al.
He did love having a beer with the boys and we did with him as well.
He will be missed by all who knew him.
My sincere condolences to all his family.
Cheers to you Big Al !!

Growing up in Esquimalt my first encounter with Al was on my way to the penalty box while playing minor hockey in Esquimalt. Years later, my family and I had the pleasure of being neighbor's of the Moore family. I will remember Al as being a really good guy, he will be missed by all.
My condolences go out to both his family and friends.

Thank you to Al for all the wonderful memories he brought the Paul Family.... JP was one of his best friends for as long as I could remember. I hope the two boys are reunited and enjoying a beer and a burger. I hope the Moore family finds peace. Much Love, One of John's grandaughters. <3

Uncle Al, I will cherish many fond memories of you as well as those shared with Auntie Jerry and the family. My favourite by far are memories of our family gathering at Granny and Grandpa Davies House in James Bay. We all enjoyed having tea, home made scones and yummy preserves. Love always and until our paths cross again.

Family and friends of Allen,

Saddened to read of Allan's passing. For those who grew up in James Bay during the 40s and 50s and played baseball, the two Allans, Al Moore and Al Richie, were synonymous with the James Bay 14 and 16-year-old baseball teams. A lot of memories, all good.

Unfortunately, most, if not all associated with the team have passed on. Len Chekwech, Tom English, and I are probably the only living members of the team. Sure, Allan's sister Maureen recalls fondly these links to the past.

Al lived a long and eventful life. My condolences to his immediate family and friends. RIP
