Tom Oshiro Obituary

OSHIRO, Rev. Tom (Tommy) Saori March 13, 1928 - June 21, 2017 It is with great sadness that we say farewell to our beloved Brother, Father, Papa, Uncle and Pastor. He was the son of Okinawa immigrants, grew up in Kenora, ON and graduated with a BA from McMaster University. He began his pastoral ministry in Ontario to the communities of Emo and Barwick, Brantford (Immanuel Baptist) and Cambridge (King St. Baptist). He stepped into a post as Area minister of the Baptist Convention of Ontario & Quebec followed by a similar position with the Baptist Union of Western Canada, finally settling in Victoria as pastor of a local church once again, at Royal Oak Baptist Church. As his ministry there was coming to a close, he stepped in as Counsellor and eventually Pastor & Executive Director at the Mustard Seed Street Church, where he spent the remainder of his formal ministry retiring at the age of 84. Tom was a constant fixture in the Rotary Club and was given the 2002 Citizen of the Year Award in Victoria and also received the Leadership Victoria Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. His last 3 years were spent as part of the vibrant community at the Cridge Seniors Centre where he befriended anyone he shared a meal with. Tom will be remembered as one who poured out the love of Jesus to everyone he met and lavished kindness and compassion on all from the greatest to the least. Tom has left an invaluable legacy to his family. He was predeceased by his wife, Vietta, brothers, George, Hiro, Jim and sister Yoshiko. He is survived by his sisters, Mitzi, Lillian, his children Mike (Sue), Sandy (Russ), Barb (Garth), his 10 grandchildren and their 3 spouses. A Memorial Service will be held at Glad Tidings Church, 1800 Quadra St., Victoria on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at 3pm. In lieu of flowers we ask that donations be given to The Mustard Seed - Victoria or The Cridge Centre for the Family. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallgardens.com

I have known Tom since I was a child as he was a friend of my parents, Clair and Mary Clark. I have fond memories of visiting with him over the years, both in Kenora and Victoria. He was a lovely man.

Tom was a special person in my life and in the life of my special child

Charlotte - he prayed over her many times in the PICU. His tenderness and loving heart will be remembered forever - he left his 65th birthday party to come to her bedside and pray. Thankyou Tom for your shining love.

I knew Tom in BYPU days in Northern Ontario so long ago, and renewed our friendship when our two daughters were students at BLTS in Calgary. Tom and his sisters were examples of God's grace. May you all feel great comfort in the blessing of Tom's strength and gentle love.

Although I too was born in Kenora and spent my childhood there, I didn't have the pleasure of meeting Tom until each of us was invited to make a golf foursome in Victoria with his good friends Rev. LLoyd and Jean Pierce. I saw him several times after that on the golf course and at several services at Royal Oak Baptist. He was such a gentle, kind man and the epitome of the way a Christian should live life here on earth. He will be very greatly missed. My sincere condolences to the family.

Tom certainly was one who "let his gentleness be evident to all" (Philippians 4:5). Psalm 115:16 reads, "Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his faithful servants." There is none more faithful than Tom.

Over the years our family has had close ties with our great friend Tom. Besides officiating at our daughter Lisa's wedding he also baptized our grand daughter Emily.
Our family sends their heartfelt condolences to the Oshiro family who had the privilege to belong to this great man for all these years.
We have always felt greatly blessed to be able to call Tom a good friend.
We imagine a joyous welcome upstairs on the arrival of God's devoted Messenger.
A rest well deserved Dear, Dear Friend.

The Lord uses many people for the extension of His Kingdom, but few have had the integrity and faith to walk that path as did my good friend Tom Oshiro. I know that he is eating in peace. Alleluia!

Rev. Tom was my friend. I met him through Tim James, a troubled soul whom I'd known since childhood. It was Tom who told me Tim had passed away. He hugged me while I shed a tear for someone who never had a chance.
