Vera May Obituary

MAY, Vera Gertrude (nee Brooks)

Vera passed away peacefully at the age of 97 on July 16, 2023, at the Chemainus Healthcare Centre. She was born to her parents, Merton and Hedvig (Westling) Brooks, at their home in Constance, Saskatchewan on March 26, 1926.

In 1937 the family moved to Chemainus to escape the drought-stricken prairies. Within 2 years, WWII began and impacted much of Vera's teenage years. Food rationing, black-out curtains and the loss of some of her classmates were all part of her experience. After graduation from Ladysmith High School in 1943, Vera moved to Duncan. In 1946 she met her husband Brian while playing badminton. They were married in 1947 and remained in Duncan to raise their family. They enjoyed many years of hosting campouts, weddings and family reunions on their property before Brian's passing in 2001.

Vera had a great love of wild flowers and enjoyed many hobbies, including reading, needlework, collecting antiques, gardening and watching the birds at her feeders. Vera and Brian belonged to the Cowichan Historical Society and the Scouters Guild.

Vera was predeceased by her parents, her husband Brian May, their son Gerry, daughter-in-law Marlene and daughter-in-law Linda. Also predeceased by her brothers Max, Wes, Donny, Gerry and Bob Brooks and her sisters Doris Gallagher and Ruth Atkinson. Survived by son Dan, daughter Brenda (Hugh) Gloster, daughter-in-law Linda; 6 grandchildren - Carly (Russ), Laine (Jess), Davianna (Mike), Corey, Heather (Matt), Julie and 6 great-grandchildren - Cole, Wade, Marlene, Lewis, Stanley and Arlo; sister-in-law Lorene (Jim) Milligan; many nieces and nephews.

The family is grateful for the many relatives and friends who visited and helped Vera over the years. Also, many thanks to the Chemainus Healthcare staff for their kindness and care especially throughout COVID.

A private family gathering will be held in the future. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Vera's memory to the Chemainus Healthcare Foundation, Box 462, Chemainus, BC VOR 1KO.
