Violet Hiscock Obituary
HISCOCK, Violet (Berry) Mom was born in Victoria on November 17, 1918, a week after the end of World War 1. She was premature; it was said because her mother was suffering from the Spanish Flu like many others at that time. Because of the pandemic there was no room at the hospital so she was born at home. But despite weighing only 3 1/2 pounds she showed from the beginning she was a determined woman and with the help of a midwife, she survived. Mom grew up on Washington Avenue and attended Burnside school and Victoria High. She often spoke of her childhood in Victoria: visiting the market; riding the streetcars and the Jitney; and swimming at the Gorge "free and pay " with her beloved sister Doris. She loved to tell us stories involving Doris and her brother Dick. After graduating from Victoria High School, Mom enrolled in nursing school becoming a registered nurse. She worked at the Jubilee Hospital and was the head nurse in emergency. As part of their job, Victoria police officers would show up from time to time and one of them, Stanley Hiscock, she fell in love with. They were married in 1949. Mom did an excellent job raising 3 girls and a boy. She worked part time as a public health nurse and she loved her garden. After Dad died she carried on managing their holly farm, she volunteered at the Gorge Road hospital, and at the Royal BC museum for several years. Mom spent her later years living quietly in her house by the water. Mom leaves her daughters Mary Anne, Leigh (John), Janet, and son Don (Lise). Nine grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren The family wishes to thank Tracey and Dawn from Beacon Services for the excellent care they gave mom over the years and to Adrienne and Theresa (Vic General 4th floor South nurses) for their kindness and compassion shown towards mom on her last day on earth. A Memorial Service will be held on November 01, 2010 @ 2:00 pm at First Memorial Funeral Chapel 4725 Falasie Drive, Victoria, BC. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to a charity of one's choice. We love you and we miss you Mom. 608252
