Walter BALFOUR Obituary

With great sadness we announce the passing of Walter in Victoria.

Born in Hilton, Scotland, he was the eldest of four sons of Walter and Wilma Balfour. He graduated from the University of Aberdeen with a B.Sc. in Chemistry with first class honours, followed by a PhD at McMaster University. He spent 37 years as a Chemistry professor at UVic and was honoured with a D.Sc. by the University of Aberdeen in 1985.

Walter expressed his Scottish heritage as a respected member of the Saltire Society and in Scottish country dancing. His performances of the "Address to a Haggis" were legendary. A love of research was reflected in his passion for genealogy and in writing historical accounts. He enjoyed travel, golf, and acrylic painting.

Walter is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Rosemary, cherished daughters Annemarie (Darcy) and Jennifer, and family in the UK and Canada.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

I knew Walter at the University of Victoria when he was Chairman of the Appeals Committee for Campus Security. I was the office secretary and would hand him the papers he needed for the meeting. We also, later, knew each other through the Victoria Genealogy Society. Rosemary it has been a delight to know both of you socially and I will miss my friend.
My condolences to your family members in BC, Saskatchewan and Scotland.
