Wilfred Evans Obituary
EVANS, Wilfred G. June 1, 1925 January 28, 2010 Laughter, love and living life with zest! That's how Wilf will be best remembered. He passed away peacefully at the age of 84 in the Saanich Peninsula Hospital after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. In his final days, Rene, his wife of 57 years rarely left his side. Born in Birsay, SK, to parents Margaret Mackie Duncan and George Thomas Evans, Wilf moved to Saskatoon and joined the Canadian Navy in 1944. He arrived in Toronto with $4 in his pocket and secured a job with Good Year. He married Irene Ross in 1952, later moved to London, ON making his career with London Life. In 1963, the family relocated to San Jose, CA enjoying sunshine and surf for 5 1/2 years, while working with Metropolitan Life. In 1968, they moved to Victoria, BC resuming his career with London Life until retirement. As an avid golfer, Wilf was a life-time member of Glen Meadows Golf Club accomplishing 3 holes-in-one. He challenged the best at cryptogram and crossword puzzles, also baseball and hockey stats; his mind was sharp and quick. Wilf is survived by his wife Rene; sons Doug (Merrilee), Jim (Cindy), and daughter Barb (Con); grandchildren Lindsey (Les), Courtney (Mike), Michael, Justin and their mom Lorna; great granddaughter Hailey; sisters Hazel, Diane (Lloyd), brothers Paul and Michael (Kay); and extended family. Wilf was predeceased by his brother Rollin, sister Ruth and son-in-law Larry. Special thanks to Dr. J.H. Forster; Dr. Donna Cuthbert; Nancy Schultz, OT; and the Beacon Home Care staff for the exceptional care given to Wilf. We were comforted by the compassion of the Palliative Care nurses and volunteers. A memorial celebration will be held on Thursday, February 4th, 11:30 a.m. at Glen Meadows Golf & Country Club, 1050 McTavish Rd. Sidney, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Wilf's name to the Palliative Care Unit of Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation, 2166 Mt. Newton X Rd, Saanichton, BC or a charity of your choice. 577108
