William Capek Obituary

CAPEK, William Passed away peacefully on September 1, 2020 at Veterans Memorial Lodge. He was born on September 15, 1922 on a homestead 20 miles outside of Neepawa, Manitoba. He is predeceased by 5 brothers and sisters. His oldest sister Sonia and brother Don reside in Winnipeg. Bill joined the Lake Superior Regiment and fought in WW2 during 1944-1945. After serving in a peacekeeping role in Europe, he joined the Airforce as a tailor and was stationed in Winnipeg. He recently received France's National Order of the Legion of Honour. Bill met Margaret in Winnipeg, they married in 1949 and spent 71 wonderful years together. After tours with the air force throughout Canada and Europe, he accepted early retirement and moved to Victoria in 1965. Bill worked at W&J Wilson Clothiers and finished his career at Woodwards as their head tailor. Bill enjoyed gardening, walks around the nearby golf course, and excelled in stained glass. Travelling Europe and visiting family in Winnipeg kept Margaret and Bill busy. Survived by his wife Margaret, daughter Donna, son Glen (Debra), grandsons, Graham, Cameron (Kasia) and great - grandson Ethan. A Celebration of Life to be held at a later time. Tributes, if desired, may be made to Veterans Memorial Lodge. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallgardens.com

My folks moved to Victoria in the 1970,s and were fortunate enough to have Bill and Peggy as next door neighbours. Bill and my dad worked together at Woodwards and became really good friends. Always willing to give a hand, cheerful and happy he was the heart of Blenkinsop. A really nice, considerate bloke. To Peggy and family our condolences. Love Sue and Tony Mitchell

Bill-- a life marked by integrity, transparency,.. and personal warmth and wit with this old pastor (he and Peggy as core people of St. Peter's, Lakehill-- Donna's beautiful "BELIEVE' stitchery hangs over the entry to the church pews!). Two of his gifted stain-glass angels grace our home. A privilege to count Bill as friend... Thanks Be To God! David Fuller (Rev.)

Bill and my father were good friends for many decades, and our families had many very happy times together. I remember, in particular, camping in the Capeks' back garden when we visited from Winnipeg before we moved to Victoria. Bill and my father last spent time together when they were both in respite care at Veterans Memorial Lodge--two elderly guys sharing memories and a long friendship.

My condolences to Peggy, a gentle person who will miss her dear Bill tremendously, and to the Capek family.
