William Gidden Obituary

William 'Bill' Craig Gidden passed away June 4, 2021 at the age of 71, in Victoria BC after a short battle with cancer. Bill was born in Victoria and was extremely proud of his connection to the city and the island. Bill was a fun and outgoing guy who loved spending time with friends and family. He was a retail businessman on Government Street for the past 50 years and was well known and admired in the community. Bill loved hockey, golf, skiing, relaxing on the beach and cherished the friendships with all the people he met along the way. He spent a tremendous amount of time in the United Kingdom for work and leisure forming important life- long friendships. He regularly traveled all over the world exploring different cultures with friends and family. He is survived by his three sons Stephen, Graham and Andrew, their wives Allison (Graham), Emily (Andrew) and four grandsons Wyatt, Robert, Henry and Lachlan. Bill will be remembered for his smile, friendly approach to life and mystic allergy to tequila. Raise a glass and cheer on Bill up in the big arena in the sky, he will be missed.

I have been so sad learning of Bill’s passing. I can’t imagine what the family has been going through, to lose him on the heels of John’s passing. Bill was just one of the nicest, kindest people I’ve ever known. He always took the time to chat when I’d see him in town. He had a brilliant smile that touched so many many people. I’m thinking of you all. ♥

I played with Bill on the Cowbuoys hockey team from about 1982-1990. I certainly admired his talent , quite often we would be room mates when on road trips. This is when I got to realize what a gem of a guy he was.
Our lives took us to much different areas as the years went by but will always remember him in the brightest of lights.

Aw Billy G.
We were introduced to each other well over 30 years ago at one of Porky's golf tourneys on Salt Spring Island by our mutual friends Bob McIvor and Darryl Leswick whom you have now joined. As the Universe would have it on the ferry trip home we became life long amigos. Who would have known that our friendship would take us golfing all over Vancouver Island, Nottingham, Scotland, hell.."let's go to South Carolina." Washinton State, Mexico and Regina's first hosting of the Grey Cup...not to mention harbour golf late at night across from the world famous Crest Hotel.
Perhaps the best days of my life were starting every day with a walk 2 miles down the beach to Joe's Oyster Bar in Mazatlan. This was after a morning swim in the ocean and your your fresh fruit tequila smoothies provided from the cooler and blender we smuggled into our room.
So many good times my friend and I'm sure there are many more awaiting us in the heavens above. In the meantime we will all cherish our memories of you.
So Billy G. hold the tee box for me, I'll be along in a while.
Forever, Billy Du.

Bill Gidden was a great friend of mine for many years.
I was his trainer and hockey for a long time Bill was a great skilled hockey player who always played cleanly and was very much respected both on and off the ice.
It was a great pleasure to know Bill and his family.
I specifically remember all the road trips down to the states and Alaska we had so much fun together.
I will miss you my friend and I will see you one day again in our favourite rink in the sky.
Hugs from James Cain, Jimbo.

Deeply sad to learn today that Bill has passed away. We knew him from Government Street as fellow business owners and had many lovely conversations with him over the last 25 years. A true gent and gone way too soon.
He will be missed by all on the street.
Thinking of his family and his boys whom he often proudly mentioned.

To Bills Family,
It's with heavy hearts we send our heartfelt condolences in the loss of Bill. His friendship meant a lot to Jay and I and we have oh so many cherished memories that we will always remember. Not so long ago Jay and I were walking down Government St. and bumped into Bill we were lucky to spend quite a while talking about so many different things, lots of laughter. I know all of us enjoyed that time together. As I (Sue) spent more time downtown I will really miss bumping into Bill in a variety of stores where we always did a quick catchup on the kids etc. We truly will miss you Bill Gidden . RIP Friend

First my sincere condolences to "Bill's" three sons and saddened by his
passing. I knew Bill well because of our hockey connections. I had the honour to coach one of Bill's sons, Andrew, at the former Oak Bay Minor Hockey Association( one of its founders), many years ago. Bill, when he could, was always in the stands cheering on the team & his support was much appreciated. Bill was an excellent player in his own right. Always treasure the memories of a life well lived knowing that Bill is finally at peace & pain free. Quite sure Bill, with hockey stick in hand, was greeted with open arms by St. Peter ([email protected])
