Lynn, I was deeply sorry to hear about Bill's passing. My son Oliver and I were at the funeral service and were very moved by bthe tributes to a wonderful man. When Oliver was 14 years old he asked me if he could work at Darwin. I called Bill who was in Nanaimo at the time and asked him if I could send Oliver over there to work for a couple of weeks. Oliver left Horseshoe Bay a boy and returned a man after spending two weeks with Bill. There are very few people that I would have trusted with my son at that age and it is a testament to Bill that he was one of them.On a professional level he was one of the most hard working and competent people that I ever had the priviledge to work with. On a personal level Bill was an extraordinary man for whom the phrase "Gentle Giant" seems so appropriate. My huge regret is that we lost contact. Lynn, my thoughts are with you and your family for losing a wonderful companion.A man who lit up every room he entered and touched every life he met. David Webbe.

Lynn, Chris, Jeremy, Alisha and your families,

We are profoundly sorry that Bill was taken so tragically and early from your lives. We will always remember him fondly; he had that rare and unforgettable ability to walk into a room and light it up with love, humour and always with a mischevious twinkle in his eye.

Thank you Lynn for opening your family home to us all yesterday. Meeting all your beautiful grandchildren was a true blessing. If he was watching down, Bill would have been extremely proud of you all.

Rest in peace, Bill.

I speak for many from the Evergreens over 40s Rugby Club who had the pleasure to know and play with Bill. Bill travelled to Chile and Argentina on our Evergreens 2004 tour. And what a terrific guy!
I have a very fond memory of Bill, Jim Davidson, Al Innes and myself (all of us over 6' 2") crammed into a tiny rental car, one of those tiny cars you will definitely NOT find in North America. Jim did the driving with the steering wheel up against his chest and his knees under his chin, Bill was doubled up in the front seat bowed down and Big Al and I in the back. Like sardines! We had an amazing day out touring around capped off with a visit to a great winery for some wine tasting.
One of those incredible once-off easy going days that was full of banter, stories, exaggerations and all round fun. Four big guys in a tiny car in a foreign country just having a blast!
A great day and an unforgetable memory for all four of us. Sad to see such a fine gentleman go.
It's not possible to sum up in words what a great guy Bill was.
Thanks for the memories Bill. R.I.P.

Dear Grootendorst Family,

I was the first person on scene to the horrible accident north of Kitwanga, BC that claimed William's life on Monday morning. Other passerby and myself worked hard for over an hour trying to save him, both before emergency services arrived and then assisting them after they arrived. I can not begin to express how sorry I am that I exhausted all resources I had available to me and that there was nothing more I could do to save William. I will live with this regret for the rest of my life.

Please accept my deepest condolences & sympathies. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Although I never met William I know from talking with Cornelia and Ted that he was a beloved brother and will be so very missed. I am so sorry that he is gone from the lives of all those who expected to have many more opportunities to spend good times loving and laughing together.
