William Hosie Obituary

HOSIE, William Gray
William Gray Hosie left this world with a smile on his face in the arms of his beloved wife and surrounded by his three children.
Bill, Billy, or "Mr. Hosie, SIR" to those who knew him, was born October 15th, 1941 in Aberdeen, Scotland and was the middle child of three (brother Tommy, sister Dorothy).
Many will remember him as the actor with the golden singing voice, however, we won't spend this time talking about his extraordinary accomplishments as a theatre artist, but rather who he was to us.
Bill Hosie was a loving husband and an amazing dad. His quick wit, sense of humour, and ability to make anyone feel seen and comfortable, were just a few of his magical powers. He had a sharp mind to go with his sharp wit (which was present until the very end) and a genuine thirst for knowledge. In his twenties, he read the Encyclopedia from A to Z.
Anyone who spent five minutes with Bill knew he loved cryptic crossword puzzles and he was devoted to completing them every day. For many years he could be found in the early morning at the A&W having his coffee, reading the paper, and doing the cryptic… often with brother-in-law, Jon. His afternoons were spent on the golf course with some of his dearest friends.
He had a phenomenal memory for music and would often spontaneously break out singing, especially if you said a word or name from a song he knew.
He was a kind and thoughtful man who was always quietly doing good deeds for strangers, and his friends knew they could always rely on him if they needed help.
His back porch was his favourite place to sit. Friends, neighbours, and even the neighbours' pets, always knew they were welcome to come and visit with him there.
He cherished a meaningful goodbye. Farewells, as you drove away, always consisted of him waving to you until you were completely out of sight, a habit he inherited from Ma Hosie, his wonderful Scottish Mother.
He was a romantic husband who very often left little notes around the house for his wife, which always started with "Hello Dear" and ended with "Love, Me."
He was a wonderful listener and relished a great story. He loved to laugh and he loved to make others laugh.
He spent the last hours of his life surrounded by his family, reading from his sacred book… the dictionary!
He is survived by the love of his life, wife, and best friend, Sylvia; his son, Caldon, who has his kind blue eyes (wife, Melanie, grandchildren, Liam and Maila, & grand-dog Peppa); his son, Grayson, who has his curious mind (wife, Connie, grandson, Logan, & grand-dog Caber); and his daughter, Sara-Jeanne, who has his gift of song (husband, Kevin, & grand-dog, Frannie)
Bill Hosie, you will be deeply missed by all who knew you. The music you gave us will inspire us forever and the laughter you gave us will carry us through our darkest moments. Cheerio, Billy! We love you.

A celebration of life will be organized for later in the year, and in lieu of gifts and flowers, please send a donation to Victoria Hospice for their compassionate work.

Hi to Sylvia and others from Bruce Hardy, a classmate of Bill's at Vic High and a friend in subsequent years. Many years ago, Laurie and I lived on Union Road, without knowing that Bill and Sylvia lived nearby. We moved from there in about 1990 or so and never lived near Bill again, but we did visit them at some point.
We were in Belgium in late April through May. At some point, we somehow learned about Bill's passing - I forget how. We have been back for awhile now, obviously, but are still getting caught up on other things. Now, here is a very late expression of condolence, and thoughts of a life well lived and enjoyed. Best wishes to his friends and survivors.

Aah Billy . . . we had some good times together with Campbell, Watt and Bowering - even though I didn't know you for nearly long enough, and the other three would say the same. You were a rare pal, and I can hear your voice and your laugh now. I miss you Billy. There never was anyone like you.

I was so sorry to hear of Bill's passing. He was so kind to me and to all who had the joy of getting to know him. He truly impressed upon me the value of family and was the epitome of mirth. I have so many fond memories of time spent at Hosie Hollow, and the best of them were when he was there. My prayers go up for Sylvia, Caldon, Grayson, Sara-Jeanne, and his whole family. I am thankful for knowing Mr Hosie, Sir.

Such a beautiful person, with such a beautiful voice. I first remember hearing Bill sing in rehearsal for a
CBC Tour in Cyprus & Germany where my group was privileged to be on the same program as Les Feux Follets. I shall never forget "What will I find in
this New Found Land".....it has been an ear worm for me for over 50 years, ever so sweet.

Fond memories of too few moments together over the years since. Heartfelt love & condolences to the wonderful Sylvia, and your special children. Bill will
continue to be in our hearts, & ringing in our ears!
Peace & many blessings to you, dear ones.

Bill made his neighbourhood a wonderful place to be. Always making us laugh, keeping an eye on things afoot, or simply belting out a tune, Bill will never be forgotton. He took in our cat, as apparently he was much more fun than us, and put up with his "annoying" neighbourhood borrowing things all the time, while also being gracious and helpful with that endeavour. Wishing condolences to Sylvia and family. You will be missed William, but never forgotten!

Bill and I were Vic High grads in 1960. We were classmates in Div 3 and Bill was instrumental in convincing a number of us to join the choir inspite of our obvious lack of musical talent (mine in particular). During our many grad '60 reunions Bill and I entertained each other by reliving our antics on grad night which was completely boring to others who had heard the same stories many times over. However, that didn't matter to us because they never grew old in our minds. Bill, Dorothy and I worked at the restaurant in the Strathcona Hotel for a couple of summers while we were still in school and we had a lot more fun than anyone deserved to have in a work environment.
My sincerest condolences to Sylvia and family. He will remain permanently etched on the blackboard of my mind as a wonderful, talented and creative friend. I think that everone should have a friend like Bill Hosie.

Sincerest Condolences to you, Sylvia and family, on Bill's passing. Mine is also a Remembrance of Bill's and Dorothy's gift of singing, at Central Junior and Vic High.
Also memory of these two singing on Central's front lawn. Bill's singing came forth in mighty voice, in several venues. These gave pause; remembering my dear Scottish grandfather's ancestry.

Dear Sylvia and Family

I was so sad to hear of Bill´s death. Sylvia and Bill were icons in our family as my parents, Dorothy and Gil Margison were always involved in music themselves in Victoria and immersed us from an early age. As I recall, Sylvia may have even babysat my brother Richard and I. We always knew they were an amazing duo in the music/ theatre world in Victoria and in Canada. Though I did not know Bill well, he sounds like the loveliest man and I can only imagine what an empty space he leaves in the lives of his family and friends. My deepest sympathy to you all as you try to adjust to such a loss in your world.

I'm so grateful to have grown up in Victoria during the 'Hosie' era and been inspired by Bill's and Dorothy's gifts. We are all blessed by them sharing their talents so widely, including at Vic High where it seems each got their start and the Bill & Sylvia legacy began. I'm proud to be a fellow Vic High alumnus alongside all three of them/you.

Sylvia and family-
Sincere condolences over your loss Sylvia---how very sad!!
Bill was a very special person and true gentleman...a man of many talents and a friend to all who were fortunate enough to know him. His musical and theatrical abilities were clearly special. I recall the occasional spontaneous singalongs at the Hosie home with Dorothy along with Pa and Ma Hosie leading the way.
Our good times at Victoria High School will be long remembered ---- your encouraging many of us to join the school choir was a great initiative and certainly helped bolster team and school spirit Those were great years...!!!
We'll miss you Bill ,,,,,, God Bless and thanks for the wonderful memories!!

I remember Bill as a high school student from SD 63, playing in the Victoria Schools Symphony Orchestra. At one of Vic High's Arts evening concerts, I heard this incredible young voice, Bill Hosie's, sing the charming old English song, "Cherry Ripe". I thought it was beautiful rendition, probably rarely performed by a young man. It has stayed with me all these 60 years. RIP Bill. You were a tour de force.
