William MacLennan Obituary

MacLENNAN, William Alexander August 24, 1922 - September 28, 2015 Bill MacLennan died peacefully on September 28th at Royal Jubilee Patient Care Centre, at the age of 93. He was predeceased by his wife of many years, Millie, and will be missed by his children, Alison, Anne and Donald, granddaughter Caliya, brother Ken and wife Liz, friend Joan, and extended family and friends. Born in Toronto, Bill's 25 years of service in the RCAF took his family to many locations, including their favourite, Colorado Springs. After finishing his military service in 1971, he continued his career with the Department of National Defense in Victoria, until his civilian retirement in 1989. Bill's tireless devotion to health and fitness extended through the next chapter of his life. He enjoyed working out and swimming with his gym buddies at Gordon Head Recreation Centre and openly relished any opportunity to better the training accomplishments of men many years his junior. His love of gardening included a propensity for petunias, which was tested increasingly in recent years. Always a kind man, he shocked the family with his escalating revenge-plotting against the local deer population. He grumbled that the biggest insult of all was when a new plant was eaten before the charge appeared on his Visa bill. His life-long love of art flourished in the company of his fellow carvers at Monterey Recreation Centre. The Library Lion, "Woodcarver" the carousel horse and the "Welcome to Oak Bay" sign, at the corner of McNeill and Foul Bay Rd., are among their creative collaborations. Bill volunteered in local archeology digs, followed by many peaceful hours in the archeology labs of UVic and the Provincial Museum. He was an active member of St. George's Anglican Church and the community of Cadboro Bay. A celebration of Bill's life will be held at St. George's Anglican Church, 3909 St. George's Lane, Cadboro Bay V8N 4E3, at 2:00 pm on Friday, October 16th. In lieu of flowers or donations, Bill, a proud Canadian Veteran, hope that you exercise your right to vote.

I just found that Bill had passed away while updating my Christmas list. Such a shock. Such a wonderful man. I remember the Canada Croquet matches at Dusty and Kate Miller's in Vernon, and Bill diving into the pool in his croquet whites to retrieve an errant ball from the bottom of the pool.
He was a gentleman in all senses of the word,

I knew Bill for several years as a volunteer in the archaeology lab at UVic. He made a tremendous contribution, working through our unending pile of shells from the Kosapsom site! He was always cheerful, friendly, with a great laugh. I still miss him.

I had the pleasure of knowing Bill from the Gordon Head Centre. Seeing this virtue of a man working out on the various machines inspired me to work hard at my own gym routine. I told him how impressed I was with his strength and athletic ability, despite the fact that I am less then half his age. We often shared a laugh when I teased him about I would never want to arm wrestle him after shaking my hand with his crushing grip. I remember when he mentioned he was a WWII veteran I humbly told him I can not thank you enough. The sudden expression on his face showed that he was humbly proud that his sacrifice and service had been acknowledged and not forgotten. I always felt uplifted after talking to Bill, and as a result, I was left with a smile on my face throughout the day. With God's grace we will see each other again one day mate.

Bill was a wonderful person - when it came to archaeology he put the energizer bunny to shame. Grant Keddie, Curator of Archaeology, Royal B.C. Museum

A true gentlemen he was. I was working at Base Supply when he retired (as the MCO I believe) and then discovered that he had plans to upskill his education by returning to school. A true indication of his commitment to professional and personal improvement.

It was a pleasure to know and work with Bill at Base Supply. Always a gentleman, thoughtful, kind, lots of common sense, he was a bench mak to aim for. Im currently out of the country and unable to attend on Oct 16, but will raise a pint thinking of him. John Land

I am sorry to hear of Bill's passing. I knew him through my association with him when he worked at Base Supply at CFB Esquimalt and I worked in civilian personnel, and have thought about him over the years. He was always so pleasant to deal with and was a true gentleman. My sincere condolences to the family.

Oh I've got such fond memories of "Mr. Maclennan" who was my boss at Base Supply at DND during my time there (1983-1988). He was so kind, and frequently noted how he felt I was over-qualified to be a clerk. Later, once I was hired as a reporter at the Times Colonist, he came to visit me to say how proud he was of me. I've thought about him over the years and am glad to see he lived a long life. I remember him with great fondness. My condolences to his loved ones.
