William Schuckel Obituary

William Louis Schuckel (Bill) embodied the Midwesterner characteristics of his Indiana upbringing: hard work, hospitality, commitment to family, friends, and community service. He had an unmistakable calmness and an abiding appreciation for character and competence.

He graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Forestry and moved with Helen to Oregon where all five children were born and where he worked for the Oregon State Tax Commission, appraising independently owned timber. He had a life-long love for the outdoors which ultimately took the family to Vancouver Island, where he worked for McMillan Bloedel for thirty years in an active and rewarding career.

He leaves behind family who loved him deeply, including: his wife of 65 years, Helen (Burton), children Joe, Sara/John, Victoria, Rob/Lisa, grandchildren Carli/Jon, Jena/Eric, Jeri/George, Madailein, Maria and Oscar and great grandson Cairo. He is predeceased by his parents, Edwin and Marie, his brother Jerry, and by his first and beloved son, Ed. His loss is felt by the far-flung Schuckel and Burton families in the US and from friends in the Cowichan Valley and beyond.

A dual citizen of Canada and the US for decades, Bill loved Vancouver Island. He was a forester, hunter, boater, fisher, volunteer deputy fire chief, emergency responder, firearms safety instructor and member of the Catholic church. When he cast his vote in recent US elections, his values aligned most closely with Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris. He was not a complicated individual, and yet, in the words of Walt Whitman, he 'contained multitudes' and those who knew him are richer for this.

Dear Schuckel Family,

Thank you for sharing information about your kind and remarkable husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. I send comfort and hope my little note is one tiny example of the many ways William Louis Schuckel's life has and will bring joy to others, even now.

Ms. Helen Burton Schuckel -- I'm grateful to you for being my key to finding more about your husband. I put the two of your names together in my ancestry search after first finding the notice of your marriage license.

My father is Ron Schuckel, Bill's first cousin. The two never met, but my dad will be thrilled to read about your dad's political beliefs. Times have long been difficult for Hoosier Democrats like us but now more than ever.

I practice amateur genealogy as a hobby and would be happy to share/exchange Schuckel records and lore.

With heart-felt sympathy and pride in the Schuckel name,

Kathleen Schuckel Andrews, Indianapolis
