William Wyllie Obituary
WYLLIE, William James (Bill)
May 21, 1924 - November 28, 2023
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our father Bill Wyllie. He passed away peacefully after a brief stay at Victoria General Hospital.
Bill was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba, then moved to Winnipeg in his first year.
In 1940, his family moved to Vancouver where he attended Kitsilano High School. In 1942, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and following his training was posted to Tholthorpe in Yorkshire, England.
At the end of the war in Europe, he returned to Canada in July 1945 where, after embarkation leave, he reported to Debert, Nova Scotia to re-join his squadron for re-assignment to the Pacific Theatre of Operations. Following the end of the war, he was released from the RCAF.
In 1946 he entered the DVA education program and continued on to UBC. During this time, he met the love of his life, his future wife, Jan. They were wed in 1948.
In 1950 he joined Eaton's and held various management positions in Vancouver and Victoria. In 1978 he returned to Victoria as Operating Manager for the Vancouver Island area where he remained until his retirement in May, 1989.
Over the years he had many hobbies: photography, woodworking (where he taught at the Juan de Fuca Seniors Centre), golf, stained glass, camping and fishing.
As a lake and river fisherman he enjoyed many years fishing with his long-time buddies, Ken, Tim, and Frank at various places in BC until they found their favorite place, Hihium Lake, which they went to for several years. Many fish stories were born with the big fish that got away getting bigger and bigger as the years went by.
The family along with their faithful dog, Heidi, camped throughout BC, AB and WA. Once the children had left home, Bill and Jan continued to camp in the same areas for many years and discovered new areas, such as Maui and Bamfield with good friends.
Following Jan's death, Bill travelled with his sister and her husband, Jack throughout BC, WA, Oregon, and sailing to Alaska.
Bill was predeceased by his wife of 53 years (2003). He leaves his children James (Barb), Nancy, Mike (Diane), Steve (Jan); his grandchildren Thea (Kevin), Justin (Erica), Ryan (Allyson), Sarah (Bryan), Jessica, Kye (Lauren), Devon (Christian), Taylor (Shonah); his great grandchildren Samantha, Sophie, Caleb, Olive, Walter, Bernard, and Efina. He also leaves his sister Carole Edgar and nieces Wendy Kaczur, Cindy (Andrew) Forrest. Bill was anticipating the birth of two great grandchildren from Devon (Christian) and Ryan (Allyson), both expecting in early 2024.
Bill had requested no service at this time. A celebration of life for family will take place at a later date.
