Winifred Scott Obituary

SCOTT, Winifred 1913 2010 Winifred passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 20, 2010 at the Victoria General Hospital. Winifred was born in Quebec City and grew up on the campuses of boys' schools where her father (Charles Scott) was teaching while she attended Netherwood and Edgehill schools. She was a young graduate and spent a year at school in England, before attending Dalhousie-Kings. Always a woman before her time, Winifred completed an undergraduate degree in Geology and Chemistry. Her intention was either to continue as a field geologist or to return for graduate studies. However, after a plea from her former Headmistress at Edgehill, she agreed to return and to teach for one month. The month turned into four years and Winifred's career in education was launched. Twelve years at Miss Edgar's and Miss Cramp's School in Montreal, teaching primarily Chemistry and Mathematics; six years as Headmistress of Miss Matthew's School in London, Ontario; Headmistress of Norfolk House School in Victoria from 1957-78. Winifred dedicated her life to education and influenced the lives of many young women. After her retirement Winifred was a very active volunteer at the Juan de Fuca Hospital. Her passion for photography and travel saw her on frequent adventures. She often advised that one should travel when one is young, because climbing Machu Picchu was much more difficult in one's 80's. Her last trip at age 90 was to Antarctica and the Falklands to see the penguins. Winifred was the epitome of a life-long learner. She was inquisitive and embraced technology enthusiastically. Winifred will be sadly missed by her alumni, friends, cousin Martin and Margaret, and her adopted family: Jane, Peter, Clare & Rachel. A Funeral Service will be conducted by the Very Reverend Dr. Logan McMenamie in CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, Quadra and Burdett Streets, on Tuesday June 29, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. followed by a reception in the Chapter Room. Donations may be made to Glenlyon Norfolk School Foundation for Bursaries and Scholarships in memory of Winifred Scott. Mail to Advancement Office, 1701 Beach Drive, Victoria BC, V8R 6H9 594190

I was a student at Norfolk House for four elementary years, and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Like others, I too was rather in awe of Miss Scott, and even in the younger grades, we could sense that there was a standard of excellence that she wanted us to reach. Later, as a young adult, when I happened to meet Miss Scott, she remembered me, which I thought was pretty good! She was a wonderful headmistress, and I am very grateful for my years at Norfolk House.

I attended Norfolk House for only two years, but I vividly remember all my conversations with Miss Scott. At 12 years old I was in awe of her commanding presence, her energy, and her integrity. Even if I was not aware of it at the time, I believe that she influenced and inspired me on so many levels, and continues to do so to this day. I am sorry I did not get to know her better, for as I read about her amazing life and all her accomplishments, I am struck by what a wonderful person she was. She will be missed by all, but her memory and fine work will live on.

Miss Scott was one of the most amazing people I have known and her influence has touched many aspects of my life. Her sense of fair play was impeccable and her love of life contagious. I am proud that she was a part of my life and the lives of so many others. All her "girls" will miss her.

I taught Drama at Norfolk House under the stern eye of Winifred (and Muriel) when I was Judy Bradshaw. I was in awe of her, and later in the next stage of my life, she gave me a bed for one of my children, when I returned to Canada as Judy Treloar.
I went over to pick it up, and 3 gin and tonics later, got to know her in a deeper way, and came to love her.
She always knew my name!!
We had Summer Reunions, us "old girls" and we just loved to see her, becoming braver as each year passed!
My condolences to the Gardners and sincere apologies at not being able to be at the service. I am off on adventure that would make her proud!
Sincerely
Judy Treloar

Miss Scott was simply an amazing woman. She was my headmistress for most of my schooling but it wasn't until many years later that I actually got to know her and discovered just how amazing, wonderful, witty, kind and wise she was. I think, for me, I can sum her up by recalling how she once, in her eighties, told me ( and I in my forties at the time) that I must really try to learn to be more progressive. And she was right!!
She will be missed but her fine work will live on in the lives of the many "Norfies" that she influenced.
Many condolences to the Gardner family.
With sincere admiration, Verity (Williams) McGregor
