Winston MAHABIR Obituary
MAHABIR Dr. Winston Jules Mahabir, a very special man, died peacefully of pneumonia on September 18 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria with family at his side. He was 82 years young. He will be lovingly remembered by Joan, his wife of 53 years; his children Valerie, Graham, Gilda, Marina and David; his grand- children Alex, Charisse, Andrew, William, Matthew, Julia and Kevin; and his sons-in-law David Briggs, Wayne Friesen and Narendra Patel. He has one surviving brother, Rodney. Winston was born in Trinidad on September 17, 1921. He had an incredibly rich life filled with his unique sense of humour, sharp wit and extreme generosity to others. He was an extraordinary scholar, physician, politician (former Ministerof Health in Trinidad), psychiatrist, author, cricketer, opera buff and lover of the race track, but most importantly, he was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and friend who touched our lives in a profound way. He was dearly loved by many and will be greatly missed. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Oak Bay Kiwanis Pavilion in Victoria for their care and kindness during the past several months. They also wish to thank Winston's physician of many years, Dr. Michael Vaughn, for his care and support over the years. A memorial service will be held in Vancouver on October 25 at St. Mary's Anglican Church, 2490 W. 37th Ave., at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow.
