ROGERS, Dorothea (Dot) August 22, 1916 - April 28, 2015 Born in Vancouver, raised in Kerrisdale, Dot was the last remaining of the four Sumner sisters. She attended Vancouver Art School, then married Philip Rogers of North Vancouver in 1940. The pair settled in Kitsilano to raise their four children and Dot became a long-time active member of the Board of Directors for Kitsilano Community Centre. She was awarded a lifetime membership for her service. Phil and Dot spent many years boating and fishing local waters with family and friends. In 1960, they bought a waterfront lot on Keats Island and moved their family adventures ashore. They built their cabin on a rocky outcrop just above high tide, it has provided enjoyment ever since. Dot always had her bags, dog, and cat ready to go so she could spend as much time as possible at her cabin. With Phil's passing she started child-minding which grew to include her grandchildren. She shared her creativity, love of nature, and community with everyone. She gardened, walked, hiked, rowed her boat, read, played games, did puzzles, and, with a wonderful memory for poetry, recited regularly whatever was appropriate for the occasion. Dot was predeceased by her husband Phil in 1967, son, Douglas, in 2010, and sisters Betty (Art Hunt), Joan (Louis Morin), and Pat (Art Lang). She is lovingly remembered by her son Bill (Araxie Vyse), and daughters Joanne (J-J Lemieux) and Michelle, grandchildren Zoe, Cameron, Briton, Hilary (Josh Binkley) and Samantha . For the past 8 years, Dot has resided at Columbus residence. Here, we saw the re-emergence of her inner artist. Dot's heart failed quickly and quietly on April 28th, we thank the staff at Columbus for their wonderful love and care, we couldn't have asked for better. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00pm, June 14th at Columbus Residence, 704 West 69th Avenue, Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Arthritis Society (
walktofightarthritis.ca), 895 West 10th Ave, Vancouver BC, V5Z 1L7 in Dot's memory would be graciously appreciated.
