Paul Harris Jones
November 13, 1928 - February 28, 2026Paul Harris Jones passed away peacefully at home on February 28th, 2026 at age 97.
Born in Shimla, India on November 13, 1928, the third child to Alexander and Hilda Jones (nee Binge), he grew up roaming the foothills of the Himalayans with his naturalist father, studying birds, and graduated from Bishop Cotton School. During Partition, he moved briefly to the United Kingdom then emigrated to Canada in 1948. He attended UBC in Vancouver, completing a BSc in Forestry and meeting Mavis Ruth Jones of Cranberry Lake, who he married. They subsequently went to live in England where Paul completed a Graduate Diploma in Forestry Economics at Oxford. Returning to the West Coast of Canada, they had three children and settled in the countryside around Ottawa, where Paul worked for the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development for the Canadian Government.
In 1967, Paul left work in the Canadian Forestry sector and accepted an overseas posting with the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations. He lived with his family in Turkey for five years and completed an assignment as assistant director, then opened his own consulting firm and worked around the globe as a forestry economist until his retirement in 1989. During these years, Paul and Mavis returned often to home on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. They increasingly volunteered for the causes of wilderness and wildlife for which they shared a passion. A bird species of particular interest was the Marbled Murrelet, due to a decline in numbers caused by habitat erosion. In 1999, Paul and Mavis won the Davidson Award for Conservation, from Nature Vancouver, for their work with Friends of Caren in securing an old growth provincial park.
A dedicated artist, Paul wrote and illustrated several books, including a record of his falconry experience called Shahin and drawings for Mavis's poetry book entitled Fog Larks.
He was a friend to many, a force of nature, and will be deeply missed. He is survived by his sister Angela Kaye, son Peter, daughter Ruth, son-in-law Skooker and grandchildren, Jason, Alex, Paul, Sydney, Harrison and Simon.
A memorial service for Paul will be held at 2pm on June 26th at Pender Harbour Community Church in Garden Bay, B.C.
