Stanley Bodlak Obituary

On July 21st we said good-bye to Stan, social worker, art devotee and gallery owner, bridge player, traveller, theatre goer, cat lover, game bird hunter, photographer, beachcomber, bargain finder & garage sale aficionado, rapacious reader, music lover, whisky drinker, proud Polak and all round bon vivant. Predeceased by his parents and first wife Joan, Stan is survived by his wife Jean of 40 years, daughters Karen (Douglas), Corinne (Roland), granddaughter Emma, sister Jean Brach (Frank), as well as other family members and numerous dear friends. Stan's sense of humour and love of life will be greatly missed. Stan's life will be celebrated on Sunday, September 15th at 2:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Church of Vancouver, 949 West 49th Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations to a YWCA family services program or the SPCA are gratefully appreciated.

I find myself fondly remembering Stan every day.
Though I only ever knew him on-line, Stan really got me into photography and art appreciation.

Blees him.

I'm still amazed at how easily Stan coerced me until helping pluck pheasants when I was about 10. And when I was old enough to live on my own, he sold me my first real piece of art, and it still hangs on my wall. He could whisper little funnies in my ear, sharing a joke or opinion and I felt like we were the only ones in the world who "got it". He understood the teenage girls that hung around at the Bodlak house (or pretended to with little eye rolling) and we always felt welcome. I never knew what next adventure would happen. He was the cool dad, the one who made me feel good about myself, and even as an adult he worked his magic just with a nod or a wink. Bless your heart, Stan. You'll be missed. Love to Jean.

Well Stan, Thank you for your daughters and your humour while growing up in the ol' Kerrisdale neighbourhood. I liked the questions you posed to us as teenagers and your curiousity... a great Dad!

Stan & I worked together at the Little Mountain Social Services office in the late 70's. Our combined sense of humour kept us going through some challenging times. It has been a while since we met again, but from time to time I would find myself on Granville Island and would go visit him. He was a wonderful person and will be missed so much. I'll make a point of being at the service in September.

I run several bridge games throughout the city each week, so Stan was a familiar figure at the table. I shall miss his gentle disposition and his sense of humour. He was a true gentleman and while we are all saddened by his passing, we are also so very much richer for having had the privilege of knowing him. Please accept by deepest sympathy to you and your family.

Stan was my supervisor at the Area Development Project in South Vancouver. I remember him as a bright and artistic individual. Always pleasant to have a conversation with. A great guy.
