Oscar Rochefort Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Oscar D. Rochefort at the age of 79, on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at the McNally House Hospice with his family by his side. Cherished father of André (Megan) and Oscar R. Rochefort. Grandpapa's big smile, laughter and love will be forever in the hearts of his grandchildren: Anne, Madelaine, and Parker, and his step-granddaughter Natasha. Oscar will be sadly missed by: his brother Jacques (Claire), sister-in-law Ann Rochefort, many nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors. Predeceased by his parents Joseph Oscar and Clémentine (née Barrette) Rochefort, as well as his siblings: Dr. Jean-Marie, Dr. Guy, Gisèle (Claude) Trudel, and Ghislaine (George) Parent.
Born in Astorville, ON; he graduated in 1969 with honours from the Ontario College of Art & Design. Oscar pursued a teaching career in Montreal, QC. He furthered that career at Confederation Secondary School in Welland, ON, until 1972, when he was called west to work as a Structural Designer for MacMillan Bloedel Packaging Ltd., in Vancouver, BC.
The next forty years would be spent travelling across North America and around the world as a Design Consultant, advocating for computer assisted design while developing innovative and sometimes patented packaging solutions. In that time, he also started a family and took his sons camping and fishing every chance he could. He was a leader with Scouts du Canada for many years. His love of golf was as legendary as the loud pants he'd wear at Foyer Richelieu tournaments. He loved to play basketball, to bowl, and he was an excellent cook. He would eventually return to Welland for his retirement.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the WELLAND FUNERAL HOME, CREMATION AND RECEPTION CENTRE 827 East Main Street, Welland, on Wednesday, May 17, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at Église Sacré-Coeur, 72 Empire Street, Welland at 1:30 p.m. Special thanks to the many healthcare professionals (RNs, PSWs, doctors, etc.) and volunteers who aided Oscar. Memorial donations made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Walker Family Cancer Centre, McNally House Hospice or Fonds Foyer Richelieu would be appreciated by the family.

My uncle. Stuffing me in a snow bank, showing me how to shoot two partridge with one shot, letting me live with him out West until I had found my own place. Barbecues, golf, beers. He was a good guy, and I did not see near enough of him in his later years. Memories live on. Repose t'ois m'oncle. Jacques.

As the first grandchild & Oscar's first niece, he sometimes took me under his wing. I remember he took me to a drive-in when I was about 15 (I think it was a Clint Eastwood movie). This was in North Bay, Ontario, where he was born. He taught art at our high school, Ecole secondaire Confédération in Welland for a few years when I moved there. Good thing too because his idea of large painted murals in bright coloured Peter Manx style really made for a great prom night decor. When I got a job at the Edmonton Journal one summer, I stayed with him and Liz for just over a week until I found my own place. I babysat André and had some lovely times with Liz, as usual. Unfortunately, I can't attend Oscar's funeral on Wednesday but wanted to send my condolences to André, Oscar Jr., their families and of course, to Liz. Repose en paix, Oncle Oscar. -Lili xoxo

Oscar was a true friend, a great cook, a gifted designer, a kind and caring man. We miss his thoughtful conversation, his big love of life presence, his joyful tales of his family that he was so proud of, his insights in the world of art and design, and his ethics. We all received an amazing art /design / life education at the Ontario College of Art together, and reunited later in life in eastern Ontario..We loved you Oscar, you are missed.
