Betty Gueldner
Betty Gueldner, former resident of Weyburn, passed away at home in San Diego, California, on January 30, 2024, surrounded by family. She was 91 years old. She is predeceased by her husband Robert (Bob), siblings Gordon, Walter and Mildred and son-in-law Stephen Christensen. She is survived by her four children, Donna Christensen, Kenneth (Michelle) Gueldner, Douglas (Sue) Gueldner and Brenda (Lee) Peters, her three grandchildren, Michael (Stephanie) Christensen, Hope (Kris) Thiessen and Ryan (Brittany) Peters and her six great-grandchildren, Ashlea, Jaeden and Ethan Christensen, Oliver and Rome Thiessen and Hartley Peters. Betty is also survived by nieces and nephews. Betty was born in Elbow, Saskatchewan in 1932, to Inga and George Hope. She was the youngest of four surviving children. They lived on the family farm until the death of her mother in 1947. Betty was educated in a one room schoolhouse designed for grades 1 through 8. Upon reaching 9th grade, her father decided to move to the city of Saskatoon where she could attend high school. She enjoyed her time there, especially with the music program and singing in several choirs and quartets. In 1951, she left Saskatoon and moved to Weyburn to train as a psychiatric nurse, graduating in 1954. During this time, she met Robert (Bob) Gueldner, the love of her life, and they were married in 1953. Between 1956 and 1961, they had 4 children: Donna, Ken, Doug, and Brenda. When time allowed, Betty helped Bob at the Weyburn Hardware store owned by Bob and his brothers Henry and Herb. In 1977, Bob & Betty decided to retire and moved to San Diego, though their retirement was short lived. They started a new security business, joined St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, enjoyed many sporting events, the adventures of travel, and spending time with family and friends. Betty and Bob were happily married for over 63 years before Bob's passing in January of 2017. Betty's strong will and gentle demeanor were a constant. She was a long-term survivor of multiple cancers and she let none of it defeat her, staying strong to the very end. She will be remembered for her kindness, delicious baking, her sweet friendly smile, and her twinkling blue eyes. A celebration of life will be held March 23, 2024, at 1 pm PDT.
