Helen Eggum
Helen (Mom) was a gentle spirit, quiet and kind, with an underlying strength that could turn fierce if needed. Her family was her first daily thought, her major concern and her lifelong love. Helen was predeceased by her parents, Clifford and Minnie Gallinger; husband of 56 years, Norman Eggum; in laws, Kristian and Alice Eggum; brothers, Donald (Georgina) Gallinger and Marvin Gallinger; sister, Elaine (Larry) Phillips; brothers in law, Andrew Bisson, Richard Kater, Reginald Eggum, and Melvin Eggum; sisters in law, Dora (Ron) King and Ellen Fehr. Helen was born into a family of eight siblings with three older brothers and two older sisters. As the third child from last, Mom was pretty sure she was the last child to not get spoiled. Their journey as a family began West of Weyburn on a farm near Trossachs. In 1944, the family moved to a property north of Halbrite, where they established a thriving farm, which continues in the family to this day. This farm has hosted generations of Gallinger Clan for Christmas and New Year celebrations as well as giving many young family members a peek into a working farm. This is haloed ground to many here today. Life on the farm was busy and scope of the operation soon became large. There were often hired hands to help with the work, but the children were all responsible to pull their fair share of the load as well. The kids were raised with love and often that love was a bit tough. There were no sissies leaving there to join the world. Helen and her siblings attended school at St. Elmo, Deville and Crow Lake rural schools. The trek to school was usually on back of a horse named old Dan or in a wagon pulled by Bill and Charlie. Often chores were expected to be completed before and after school. On June 6, 1958 Helen married Norman Eggum at the Weyburn Anglican Church. They started their life together living in a small trailer at the Weyburn trailer court. Helen took work as a nurse's aide at the General Hospital and Norman worked for the Weyburn Co-op. From there they moved their trailer briefly to the Gallinger farm and then relocated again to the Eggum farm where they began farming with Norman's parents. In 1965 they began building a new home "across the road" from the farm. They erected the basement, added a porch for an entrance and then proceeded to "live like badgers" (as Norman would say) for nearly 5 years while they completed the upstairs as time and funding allowed. Their home was blessed with four children, three girls and one son. Cattle and grain were raised and a garden was always planted preserved and enjoyed. Helen tended to the large yard that they had planted themselves with limitless dedication. Social activities were never missed with large family gatherings and community functions regularly attended. Always a fan of old-time dancing as a base, Norm and Helen branched out into square and round dancing as child rearing responsibilities began to lessen. They were passionate about dancing and treasured the many friends they cultivated through these years. They lived on the farm until 2000 when they retired into Weyburn. They enjoyed their retirement years with Norman continuing to serve as an RM councilor and help on the farm. Helen loved having a small yard in town and devoted much of her time to beautifying that space. They continued to round and square dance well into retirement. As Helen's physical health began to decline, they left their house and downsized to condo living. This proved great foresight as cancer took Norman in January of 2015. Helen will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Audrey (Larry) Dinius of Weyburn, SK; daughter, Beverly (David) Katschke of Weyburn, SK; son, Bradley (Roslyn) Eggum of Halbrite, SK; daughter, Janice Scrimbitt (Brad) of Elbow, SK;grandchildren, Jamie (Becky), Sandra (Marc), Norma (Kevin), Naomi (Joel), Rodney (Jen), William (Stephanie), Anthony (Nicole), Justin, Shawn (Kendall), Tyson (Phoenix), Riley, Jennifer (Landon), and Michel; 31 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; brother, Armond Gallinger; sisters, Elda Kater, Jean Gallinger, Edith (Lorne) Ferguson; sister in law, Viola Gallinger; brothers in law, Kris (Sharon) Eggum, Nels (Elaine) Eggum; sisters in law, Sharon Eggum, Gladys (Ernie) Lokken, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
