Madeline McCurry Obituary
Madeline McCurry Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother Madeline McCurry (nee McGrath) passed away in Radville, Saskatchewan, on July 12, 2022, at the age of 96. Madeline was predeceased by her parents Thomas and Anne McGrath; husband Clifford McCurry; daughters Verdalee Lainton and Leanor MacPherson; great grandson Emmett Harries; and siblings Eileen, Mervin, Eldon, Roy, Norbert (Bud), and Margaret. She is lovingly remembered by her son Kurtis (Arlene) McCurry; daughters Kelly McCurry (Tim Wilkes), Anita (Marc) Pirio, and Terryann McCurry; sons-in-law John Lainton and Kenneth MacPherson; grandchildren Loralee (Richard) Harries, Becky (Corey) Stadnick, Chad (Jessica) MacPherson, Anna (Shawn) Lazar, Kimberly (Conrad) Ehr, Christopher (Stephanie) Lainton, Nicole (Edward) Vandenhurk, Liam McCurry, Graeme (Brenna) Hall, Ashley Lainton (Charles Rowley), Clinton (Emma-Leigh) Pirio, and Madeleine (Ryan) Brisebois; nineteen great grandchildren; her sister Mary McGrath; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Born on October 13, 1925, Madeline grew up with seven brothers and sisters on the family farm just south of Ceylon, Saskatchewan. Her mother cooked, her sister Eileen cleaned, and her four brothers took care of the farm chores, so Madeline's job was taking care of the garden and her younger siblings. A natural athlete, she pitched a mean game of softball. She also loved to dance and had a beautiful singing voice. In 1945, Madeline graduated from Moose Jaw Normal School and taught for the next seven years - at New Meadowview, Minton, Ceylon, and Radville. Years later, in 1970, she went back to teaching, working as a substitute teacher until 1989.In 1952, Madeline married her soulmate Clifford McCurry, and they bought a mixed farm south of Hardy, Saskatchewan. They loved being together and worked side-by-side for 24 years, milking cows, picking stones, seeding, haying, harvesting, and hauling grain. Together, they raised six children. Sadly, Clifford passed away in 1976. When her youngest daughter graduated from high school, Madeline moved to Regina to live with her oldest daughter's family and help look after their children. She spent weekends and summers on the farm where she continued working with her son and tending her garden. In 2013, Madeline moved into Radville's Golden Heritage Centre and became an active member of the tenant association. She loved playing shuffleboard, bingo, and cards with friends, and she continued to garden - filling her little flower bed with roses and irises and crowding twenty or more pots of flowers and tomatoes onto her front deck. She went to war with any gopher that dared nibble her plants! She crocheted beautiful tablecloths, doilies, and cute little animals - and gave them to family and friends. She relaxed by reading, solving word puzzles, watching curling (team Gushue all the way), and visiting with family. Madeline's funeral service was held on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at 1 p.m., in the Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in Radville, Saskatchewan. In lieu of flowers, donations in Madeline's memory may be made to the MS Society - Saskatchewan Division, 150 Albert Street, Regina, Saskatchewan S4R 2N2.
