John Jackson Obituary

1930-2022

David passed away peacefully in his sleep at Norfinch Community Care Home in Toronto on April 2, 2022 in his 92nd year. Beloved husband of Ruth Zaryski Jackson and cherished father of Ned (Nikki Macdonald), Eric (Jennifer), Lara (Michael Conlon) and Timothy (Alexandra McIntyre-Smith). Predeceased by his parents Ray and Norma (Skilling), his ex-wife Mary-Jane Hughes, daughter, Milo and sister, Rosemary Jackson. He is survived by grandchildren Sarah and Meghan Jackson, Jessica and Jeffrey Verkoeyen, Cole, Julian, Olivia and Chloe Jackson, Tatyanna Stevens, Sophia, Carter and Theodore Jackson-Smith and niece, Suzyn Jackson Gonzalez. David was born September 25th, 1930, in Toronto and spent his formative years in Leaside with his summers spent at the family cottage at Sauble Beach. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a BA and MSW, then his Ph.D. in Human Development from the University of Chicago. He taught statistics to undergraduates at the University of Chicago as an Assistant Professor. He returned to Toronto in 1965 and started his own psychology consulting firm specializing in what would be later be termed Industrial and Organizational Psychology. After starting his own business, he maintained his academic appointment at McMaster as Associate Professor of Organizational Psychology in the School of Business. He built a consultancy that thrived for over 50 years, rooted in the values of leading through integrity, serving clients, and cultivating deep relationships built on trust. Word of mouth about David's boundless energy, sophisticated strategic thinking and rigorous coaching spread quickly and his clients over the years included Canadian, American, and European companies. When he retired fully in 2016, he had worked for over 50 years as a psychologist and was the past Chairman of the Ontario Psychological Foundation and past Chairman of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP). Though David loved his work, his life was also marked by a variety of interests. He had a lifelong love of music, singing in choirs and barbershop quartets for most of his life. He also served as President of the Upper Canada Chordsmen. In addition to his passion for music David was an adventurous soul with a deep curiosity about the world. He traveled extensively to South and Central America, Africa, Europe, and Asia. Some of his adventures include hiking with his son, Ned, to Mt. Everest base camp in Nepal and Machu Picchu in Peru, canoeing on the Nahanni River in the Northwest Territories with his sons, Ned and Tim, skiing in Switzerland with his son, Eric, skiing with his daughters, Milo and Lara, in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and summiting Mount Kilimanjaro. His travel in Nepal inspired him to give back to the Nepalese people and he worked tirelessly in raising funds and served on the board of The Nepal School Project. He hoped to ski on his 100th birthday with John Denver's Rocky Mountain High playing in the background. We are saddened he won't get the chance to do that but his kindness, his love, and his zest for life will serve as a blessing for all who knew him. Though his passing is an immense loss to his friends and family, we will celebrate his legacy in our own lives through our love for each other and by keeping our sense of adventure and curiosity alive. Special thanks to Linda Zarytski, Nicholle Loughlin PSW, and many others who supported him at home over the past year. Donations in his memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Alzheimer's Association and Prostate Cancer Association. Visitation was held on April 5, 2022 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home, 524 Davis Drive in Newmarket. Funeral Service followed in the Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Burial at Mount Albert Cemetery.
