Klaus Mayer Obituary

January 2, 1937 - June 11, 2022

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Klaus Mayer, who died peacefully at his home on the afternoon of Saturday, June 11, 2022, at 85 years old, after a long and protracted battle with prostate cancer. Klaus was the devoted husband of nearly 45 years to Muriel who survives him, loving brother to Gerhard and Käthe, cherished father to Paul and David, and a proud grandfather to Claire and Abagael. Klaus also leaves behind his sister-in-law Brigitte Mayer, brother-in-law Glen Wunsch, daughter-in-law Marie Mayer, nephews Matthias and Jens Mayer and Sven and Stefan Unold, as well as grand-nieces Haley, Sophie, Nicole, Sydney, and Samira, and many dear and loyal friends and extended relations. Klaus Paul Fritz Mayer was born January 2nd, 1937, in Berlin, Germany to parents Paul and Gerda Mayer. The son of a baker, Klaus continued the family trade and completed both his journeyman and master certifications by the age of 22. Two years later, in April of 1961, he emigrated to Canada, crossing the Atlantic on the Arcadia. As a child, his family was forced to flee the Allied bombing of Berlin, seeking refuge with relatives on their farm in Silesia, Poland. It was here that Klaus, born and bred in the city, discovered his love of country life, nature, and horses, all three of which he was to find in abundance in his new home in Canada. He was followed in 1962 by his brother Gerhard, his wife, Brigitte, and their young family. After living and working in Canada for 11 years, he purchased Sprucewood Farms in the Stouffville area, where he was later married, raised, and nurtured a family, and remained for the duration of his life, a total of 50 years. It was during the beginning of this period that he came to know Jesus as his saviour and began attending Springvale Baptist Church where he would meet his wife, Muriel, and forge the long-lasting relationships with native-born Canadians in his community which he treasured. He worked as a baker for over 45 years, and in his off-hours was surrounded by the things he loved: nature, horses, good music, and his loving family and friends. Ever a kind, gentle and fair person, he was loved by many, and will not be easily forgotten. He loved others richly and was rewarded richly in love and happiness. Charitable donations may be made in his name to the Terry Fox Foundation, an organization that he campaigned for and supported fully in the last years of his life.
