Not sure what to say?

It's been over four months since Rich's sudden death, but reading wonderful comments about him from all of you really helps with healing. I miss him so much it seems unbearable at times. It still seems impossible that he is gone.

May you rest in peace. From your neighbors at Whispering Pines.

My sympathy to friends and relatives, from an "outsider", who knew him just well enough to say a bit more than "hi!" Being 14 1/2 years his senior, I feel his passing was much too soon.

"Rich", with Chuck Severance, M. Riordan, and P. Pirozzo, were indispensable as advisors on development and testing of a model that became my doctoral dissertation. Their names appear under "acknowledgments" therein. My dissertation (1990, Department of...

I had the pleasure of knowing Rich for several years at SHARE, and enjoyed his great early book on the Internet. I treasure memories of our epic 1996 shared boondoggle trip to a conference in Tokyo; he was a lively/fascinating travel companion. Most of all, he was charming, level-headed, inquisitive, collaborative, intelligent ... and much more. Too soon gone; I'll miss him.

Richard was the best man in my wedding in London in 1978. I had just had news of him after a lengthy hiatus and was hoping to renew our friendship. Too late. I choose to remember him as young, handsome, gifted and charming and with an impulsive generosity that was rare. Richard will be sincerely missed and will always have a place in my heart.

Rich recruited me from California to MSU 24 years ago to be part of his VM Systems team. We then began exploring internet applications before most had heard of it. He was truly a visionary and a joy to work for. But first and foremost he was a wonderful person. I am saddened that he is gone, and will never forget him.

This was indeed sad and surprising news for mainframe computer systems programmers, many of whom knew and admired Rich. I met Rich at the mainframe conference "SHARE", and was so often the case with him, was warmly welcomed, becoming good SHARE-mates. When we were in Chicago I led a group to dinner at the Chicago Oven and Pizza Grinder Company. He liked it so much that he contacted me later (pre-Google) for the address so he could take his wife during a subsequent Chicago visit. ...

I am really sorry to hear this. Richard was my best friend in college. Though I didn't see him so much since moving to California I kept in touch till the last few years, and I hoped to get back in touch still.

I only knew Rich from facebook of all things, but we became quite friendly and he made real impression on me. I will miss him.
