REMEMBRANCE
SANDRA BURNHAM BARTLETT
Born January 8, 1935, as was Elvis Presley, so every year the age and birthday of each was announced on the news! Sandie trained in tap, ballet and ballroom dancing. In her early years, she excelled in badminton, body surfing, basketball, sailing and was awarded a first place trophy in volleyball doubles. As a Senior, she won a Mini-McKinney medallion in bridge for most master points in her division for the year. Several of her poetry works and cartoons have been published, hardbound. After graduating from Los Angeles' prestigious Marlborough College Prep School, established in 1889, Sandie was awarded a BA degree in design from UCLA, where she also studied the cultures, politics and religions of Ancient Greece, Egypt and Asia. Later, she was employed in the design department by Charles Luckman and Associates, then the largest architectural firm in the world. Projects included the design and building of LAX, the Los Angeles World Zoo and the Broadway-Hale Department Stores. She returned to UCLA and earned an elementary life teaching credential. Her six years of teaching included teaching teachers how to teach art to children. Later she became a legal secretary, managing the subrogation department, where her Latin and Spanish really came in handy! In 1956, Miss Burnham married David Drew Bartlett, son of Sy Bartlett, who authored Twelve O' Clock High and was the business partner of actor Gregory Peck. Sandie was on some of the sets during the production of Porkchop Hill and Big Country. Her mother in law was actress Ellen Drew, who has a star on Hollywood Boulevard and another in Palm Springs. She leaves a daughter, Kelly Bartlett James, a son, Christopher Drew Bartlett and six grandchildren. She will be buried near her parents at Forest Lawn Hollywood and closes her life with a headstone inscribed GIFTED ANGEL ON A NEW ASSIGNMENT, and a poem Journey to Serenity, as follows:
MY JOURNEY TO SERENITY
Rabbits and cats,
Hamsters and rats:
Turtles, fish, and frogs,
Parakeets and dogs:
Cockroaches, ants, and other pests,
Children and their overnight guests.
Dad and mom and two childhood goats,
Spouses, lovers, and other blokes:
I've had my share of company;
But now, alone I live with me.
Zen and Taoism guide my life:
Happiness, peace and no more strife!
So now I lay me down to "SLEEP"
I pray the Lord my soul to keep;
Sending me on new assignments;
Visiting lost friends and parents.
Since our "SPIRITS" are in eternal play,
"A'HL BE BAHK", knowing this will "MAKE MY DAY"
