James Carlton "Sr." Gammon

1926 - 2019

J. Carlton Gammon, Sr. of Newport News, passed away on January 5, 2019, at the age of 92. Born on July 4, 1926, in Washington, D.C., He was a lifelong peninsula resident and owner of Gammon's Antique Shop. Loving, kind and compassionate, Carlton was a dedicated family man, avid golfer, civic minded and a good friend to many. He was referred to by many as a true Southern Gentleman.He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 70 years, Jean Winn Gammon, two sons, James C. Gammon, Jr. (JoAnne), Donald W. Gammon, daughter Vicky A. Gammon, granddaughters Carey Gammon Pierce (Ken), Leslie Gammon Rogers (Drew) and four great-grandchildren.Preceded in death by his parents, James Daniel and Vernell Skinner Gammon. Carlton was a proud graduate of Newport News High School, attended William and Mary College and served in the Army Air Corps during WWII.He was past-president of the Hampton Roads Chapter of the Jaycees, the Kiwanis Club of Newport News and twice served as president of Williamsburg Country Club. Also, a member of The Hampton Roads Assembly and Hidenwood Presbyterian Church.Carlton's greatest joy in life was being surrounded by family and friends.Family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, January 8 from 6pm - 7:30pm at Peninsula Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at Peninsula Funeral Home, Wednesday, January 9 at 2:00pm, with a graveside service immediately following at Peninsula Memorial Park.
