Richard RASCHIO Obituary

Age 66 Of St. Paul Died peacefully in his sleep on July 31, 2013. Survived by loving wife of 41 years, Pat; son, David (Karen) of Dickinson, ND; daughters, Tess, of St. Paul and Angie, of Minneapolis; three grandchildren that were the loves of his life, Adam, Renee, and Audrey; sisters, Linda VanDeusen-Price and Tia Call; brother, Greg, all of Portland, Oregon. Also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Elway the cat is the latest in a long line of pets. Dick was born in "God's Country" as he called it, Milwaukie, Oregon. He came for graduate school in Minnesota in 1968 and never left. After teaching for 40 years, he retired from the University of St. Thomas in 2010. Retirement suited Dick well. He volunteered at CLUES, loved traveling, loved fishing, relished feeding the birds and squirrels every morning, found a true passion for photography, joined the Vine Arts Gallery and enjoyed speaking Spanish at a group that met weekly for just that purpose. He also started canning and smoking meats with his friend Karl and did weekly walks and lunches with his dear friend Gerry. We are all pleased that he got to enjoy retirement, if even for only a short time. Visitation 12-4PM Sunday, August 4 at Willwerscheid Funeral Home, 1167 Grand Ave., St. Paul. Private Burial Lakewood Cemetery. Memorials should be directed to the Animal Humane Society, Sierra Club or the Project for the People of Paraguay. 651-228-1006

It's been a year, and I still can't believe your gone! I miss you so much! Patti and I are planning a road trip in September. We will travel some of the same roads you two have done in the past, and stop at a casino or two! :) I look for you, and listen for your voice, and even though I can't see or hear you, I have you close in my heart. Until we meet again - BIG HUGS! xoxoxo

On behalf of the Milwaukie High School Class of 1964, we send our sympathies to Dick's family. He was friendly to everyone and always had a smile. We were just kids but we did have fun at MHS.

When I got my first higher ed teaching job in 2006, Richard was my unofficial mentor. I had twin babies at home and was very unsure of my ability to juggle motherhood and a career in academia. He encouraged me to pursue a PhD at the U of M and told me colorful stories of his time there. Well, 7 years later I am nearing completion of my PhD in the very program that he recommended. Such a loss to lose such a lovely and genuine man.

I am so sad that the world has lost such a nice person. I met Dick by working at St. Thomas and he always had a laugh for anyone who wanted or needed one. The testaments to his character here say it all; he was a man who was kind to others. What more can be said of any human?
I hope your family finds solace in knowing that he was well liked by many and will be greatly missed. You were deeply loved by him and I am sure he is as sad as you are by his suddden departure.

I am so sorry to learn of Dick's passing. I worked with him on the Minnesota Articulation Project when we were placed in the same "assessment group" asked to develop test items. Our Spanish group was constantly told to "quiet down" and "get to work" as it seemed that we were having too much fun! At the end of the day, we turned in as much as the French and German groups! Of course it was Dick who laughed louder than all of us.
He often spoke of his wife and children. I lost my husband less than two years ago. It is hard. I wish you peace and hope you find joy in the memories.

We had a great moment of Silence for Richard and wonderful memories shared after that moment of silence from artist members this past Monday night who got to know Richard. I was teary eyed and really enjoyed remembering him all together and hearing everyone's memories. He was kind to me and I remember once he unexpectedly filled in for me so I could go get food from The Sisters of Camelot for a show I was greeting for. He was funny and straight forward and would grumble at the red tape in meetings but really was a lovable and kind human being. I was so happy to meet Richard and honored. Wish I would have had more time to know him better. My love and condolences to his family. He touched my heart and made me smile.

I am so sorry I did not learn of Richard's death until today, and so missed the visitation. With an office one floor above his at UST, we often met "in transit" and I always enjoyed his humor and valued his perspective. My sincerest condolences to the family.

You will be missed Uncle Dick. Thank you for the humor you taught me. One of the most memorable summers of my childhood was spent with you, Aunt Patti and David in Minnesota. I will cherish the moments. In peace my uncle. Deepest condolences to Aunt Patti, David, Angie and Tess. Also to my mom (his sister), Greg and Tia. My heart is heavy, but my sole is lifted with joyful memories.

Senor Raschio was one of my favorite spanish mentors at UST. I remember fondly the study abroad trip he led in 2004. It was a great experience, made entirely by his leadership and direction. He will be missed! Gracias por todo senor!!

I was and am quite saddened to hear of Richard's passing. Though I had only known Richard for about a year, in the limited context of the Art Salon held at Vine Arts, I liked him very much, found him a kind and interesting person, and appreciated the stimulating discussions about art to which Richard always made very insightful contributions. I liked to talk to him about art, and loved his photographs, especially those beautiful jazz/music oriented ones recently on display. I think it was a very good forum in which to know Richard, as I think he loved discussing art and exploring the world of ideas. I will miss Richard's presence, but I feel he has left me with valuable lessons about life and kindness, and has undoubtedly enriched the lives of countless others who have benefited from his teaching.

Richard will be remembered fondly as a member of the Vine Arts Center. He was always there to pitch in and I enjoyed his sneaky sense of humor.

We were shocked to learn of Dick's passing yesterday via the St. Thomas Dept. of Modern and Classical Languages. We contacted a couple of the "old guard" in MCL. Lyn Dodd (Spanish emerita) and Dale Kramm (Latin emeritus) shared memories of teaching in OEC all those years back. Dale especially remembers the days when he and Dick and I were "co-conspirators" in our actions to get "computerized language learning" going for all languages in our department. THOSE WERE THE DAYS!

Wayne and I send our deep condolences to Dick's family at this very sad time.

I was saddened to learn of the death of Prof. Raschio, a St. Thomas faculty colleague. Sincere condolences to his family and to everyone who knew and loved him.

It was a shock to get the word via St. Thomas yesteray about Dick's passing! I have now contacted both Lyn Dodd and Dale Kramm, who were also dumbfounded at the sad news. We remember our days as "co-conspirators for computers in language education" back in the early '80s - with great fondness.
Wayne and I send our deepest condolences to all of Dick's family.

To all who loved Richard...I am an artist-member of Vine Arts Center in MInneapolis and just wanted to say that Richard was a wonderful, talented and joyful addition to our group! When I first joined VAC i made a proposal for a solo show based on my pilgrimage in Spain. Dick having traveled extensively there and being a Spanish prof, was so encouraging, helpful and generous to me during my initial process (my first show) and all the way through. He had such a nice warm smile and I will really miss him! His photography was beautiful and so was his heart. Love and Light and peace to everyone during this very special time.

My wife and I only had the pleasure of knowing Richard for 5 or 6 years. We shared his enjoyment for photography and nature and always had meaningful conversations with him. We watched his love and creativity in photography blossom from novice to a quite proficient and keen eye, creating beautiful compositions and capturing them in his viewfinder. We have one of his photographs in our collection and will always remember him thru his image and the wonderful talks we had walking along wooded paths photographing and just taking in the majesty of Nature that surrounds us all.
To his family, we offer our sincerest condolances in this trying time, and all our best wishes.
Goodbye to a friend. Our times together were just too short, but rich with memories.
