I work at APS Employee Benefits and I remember seeing Mr. Mercer just a few months ago. He was a Retiree of APS, and would come in to pay for his plan.

He was very sweet and kind, I had no idea he was sick.

I am sad to hear he has passed but happy that he is no longer in pain.

All my best to Patricia and other family members.

I am sorry for your family's loss and for his painful battle. Mr. Mercer was a wonderful teacher! Over the past three decades I have recalled and shared his stories from his World Geography teachings. I have been fortunate to explore different areas of the world and to appreciate geography, people, culture, history -- so much of what we learned came to life! His legacy lives on in the thousands of lives he touched. Godspeed, Mr. Mercer.

I hope you will find some comfort from knowing that so many people love and remember Mr. Mercer. In 1980, a classmate introduced me to him with the suggestion I might like to tryout for a club he advised at Eldorado High School. I didn't have the confidence to do something like that, but Mr. Mercer talked me into trying. I really messed up my speech, gave up and moved on to the question phase. Mr. Mercer gave me a half smile and asked a question I will never forget, "What would you say if I said a woman's place is in the home?" He knew that would fire me up and force me to react instead of being nervous!I was welcomed into the group a few days later. I learned about government from him for the next year and to show what an amazing adviser/teacher he was, our group of girls won the highest offices at both the state and national level. I may not remember how state government works, but I remember his smile, his sense of humor (which I loved), and the confidence he instilled in me. There are so many students writing about their memories on the Eldorado Memorial FaceBook Page. He obviously was everyone's favorite.
