January 10, 2016
Steven Vance Holmes, age 63, passed away on January 10, 2016, surrounded by family and friends, following a brief illness.
Steve worked for the New Mexico Environment Department for 15 years. He helped to regulate the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Carlsbad. His motto was "Cleaning up the Planet since 1985." He was also a dedicated and effective teacher.
Steve was born in Albuquerque to Shary D. and Jhansi Pearl Holmes in 1952. He graduated from Sandia High School. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Eastern New Mexico University.
Steve was an enthusiastic drummer, performing with a drum and bugle corps while in high school. He played tri-toms with the Hill Stompers band of Los Alamos for the past ten years. His talents really shined when the band played "Sing, Sing, Sing" and "Wipe Out." Steve was a proud Triumph motorcycle rider. He was also an avid geocacher, finding caches in all fifty states plus the District of Columbia. He loved telling a good joke, and even a bad joke. His smile was constant and infectious.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Shane Holmes.
He is survived by brother Sam Holmes, his wife Paula, children and grandchildren; daughter Melissa Mato, her husband Matias, daughter Tennley and son Bentley; daughter Kelsey Hall, her husband Cody and daughters Laramie and Gracelynn; niece Celina Holmes, her husband BJ Smith and children; nephew Casey Holmes; uncle John Hicks and his wife Barbara Shigekuni; aunt Terry Hicks; special friends Rosalie Sanchez and Betsy Nichols.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at St. Vincent's Hospital for their compassionate care during Steve's illness.

My memories go back with Steve to a time when we were 5-6 years old and attending Aztec Elementary school. Growing up with many children on our block and around the corner, Steve was one who would play kick the can at the Bartlett's or just riding bikes. The Holmes family was a wonderful bunch and knew them all for a very long time. Peace be with you Steve and you are still missed.

We really never got a chance to really talk. Will resume the conversation(s) when we met again. My heart is sadden in knowing you aren't here & not hearing the numerous stories of what was going on in your life-
Although time was too brief & still trying to grasp your demise. Now, all is well & any burdens has been lifted as you are back HOME in HEAVEN with other loved ones & your doggie & pets .
We miss you dearly-that is Zeus(toy poodle). I'm shocked & in a daze since we spoke of your Italian mother's side of the family lived to be very old.
You will always hold a piece of my heart & remain in my thoughts. I grieve for you. Will always remember your voice, your laughter & calling me "Tiny Bits"
"I love you neither with my heart nor with my mind. Just in case the heart stop, the mind can forget. I love with my Soul, Soul Never Stops or Forgets."~~~ Rumi~~~

I was greatly saddened to hear of Steve's passing. I had the opportunity to work with Steve for a number of years in his role of representing NMED on WIPP regulatory issues. We enjoyed a relationship that was both professional and friendly. He was always complimentary of my work and he always gave his best for the State. I will miss him tremendously.

My condolences to all who loved Steve, especially his family, for the loss of your love one Steve. I first met Steve and his family when we all grew up in the same neighborhood. We attended Aztec Elementary, Madison Junior High and Sandia High School. He had a great sense of humor and was so bright. I remember Steve as a good kind person and was a friend. Hadn't seen Steve in many decades but he would come up in our conversations when we talked about our childhood memories...and we would laugh & laugh. Actually he was one of the friends that called me by my full name, knowing that it bugged me. Rest in peace Steve and thanks for being a part of the "Gang" when we all were growing up.

Rest in peace my friend. Steve was very proud of his Catholic Faith and membership in the Knights of Columbus. He always had a good joke to tell and a jolly laugh.
