George Hunsaker Obituary

Hunsaker, George Lee

George Lee Hunsaker was born December 23, 1924 in Henryetta, OK to Joe and Lula Hunsaker, and died Wednesday, April 20, 2016 in Albuquerque, NM. He grew up interested in technology and earned his W5JOV amateur radio license while in High School. As part of the Greatest Generation, George was drafted into the Army Air Corps in 1944 while working as an air traffic control radio operator.

After being honorably discharged in 1945, he went back to work in air traffic control and met Alma Murphy while stationed in Clarendon, TX. The couple was married on Alma's 18th birthday, October 12, 1948 at her family's ranch. The couple eventually settled in Albuquerque, NM and raised three children: Lucy, Joe and Julie.

George loved flying and eventually earned his commercial pilot's license. He was eventually promoted to Chief of air traffic control in Albuquerque and spent the last eight years of his career in Little Rock, AR. After retiring, the family moved back to Albuquerque where George was active in his church, with Sandia Mountain Lodge #72 as a 32 degree Master Mason, as Chaplain with the Ballut Abyad Shrine and was a member of the Shrine Air Patrol of New Mexico.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Elizabeth Harriss of Oklahoma City. Surviving family members include his wife, Alma Hunsaker; daughters, Lucy Hunsaker and Julie Hunsaker of Albuquerque; son, Joe Hunsaker and his wife, Barbara; two grandsons, J.T. and Jonathan Hunsaker of Gilbert, AZ; and nieces, Pat Deaver and Betty Harriss of Oklahoma City.

George loved flying and penned this poem: Last Flight â€" Don't carve my name on stone, somewhere and put me in the ground. 'Tho body's here, the soul has gone â€" a better place it's found. So let this body find a place, among the ash and dust, where it has spent the happy hours, of life, and love, and trust. Then take me to that special place, and on a windy day, just let me go, with no sad heart, and let me fly away. â€" G. Hunsaker
