Oh no....I just found out of Ken's passing. We were "coffee friends" at the Satellite on Sunday mornings. I always enjoyed our conversations. He was a writer and I am a copyeditor, but we never got to work together. I have missed seeing him but couldn't remember his last name...today I found an old receipt that had his name and phone number written on the back. This is how I came to look him up only today. So sad.

So sorry, Heidi, to hear of Ken's passing. Life takes mysterious twists and turns, doesn't it? Your kindness and generosity was born out of compassion. Love you, my friend.

Ken was a fellow classmate at the old LSU Journalism School, and a guy I always enjoyed spending time withgreat sense of humor, and so laid-back it took me a while to discover what a really fine writer he wasso sorry to learn of his death.
I had last seen him when he was inducted into the Manship School of Mass Communications Hall of Fame at LSUa well-deserved honor.

Ken and Heidi have been my very special friends for 20 years. I last spoke to Ken about three (?) weeks ago. Yes, things were going downhill very quickly, but I still like remembering that cheerful, upbeat conversation, even though I'm sure we both knew we were lying.

We first met in Chicago at a small writers' dinner arranged because Ken was coming to town to research a book. I was leaving corporate life and looking for my first adventure. So we exchanged townhouses for 6 weeks. That led to the best adventure of all my annual succession of house- and dog-sitting stints in Corrales and then Rio Rancho. I really got to thinking that New Mexico was my second home, the bassets my dogs, and Ken and Heidi part of my extended family.

Ken was the most intrepid researcher I've ever known. I missed the true crime days (just as well) but was in on the Western series, and a worthy capstone to his career as a journalist "Meltdown in Haditha," which I truly believe will remain as an important record in military history.

Ken and Heidi, I love you both, and that doesn't change.
