Lydia Gallegos Obituary

Gallegos, Lydia

Lydia T. Gallegos, 91 years old, passed away Monday morning, June 27, 2016.

An Albuquerque resident for 69 years, she was born to Camilo and Sofia Trujillo of Chimayo, NM on March 25, 1925.

She attended John Hyson Memorial Grade School in Chimayo and Allison James Junior High in Santa Fe. Lydia and her husband, Manual A. Gallegos, who preceded her in death in 2003, graduated from Menaul High School in Albuquerque in 1942. She was an accredited medical records transcriptionist for 25 years, a career she greatly enjoyed.

Lydia was the family historian. She wrote a number of articles relating to our family origin, history, and customs of Chimayo. She was instrumental in preserving lost vocabulary by creating a glossary of Northern New Mexico words and sayings. She was a pioneer in recording the 1970s Chicano movement by photographing all the murals painted on walls and buildings which are now mostly gone. Some of her mural photos are presently on exhibit at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

She is survived by her son, Robert V. Gallegos, wife Cyndy, of Albuquerque; grandsons, Ronald V. Gallegos and Raymond V. Gallegos; daughter, Gloria Best of Chandler, AZ, granddaughter, Aleta DeSilva and husband, Robert and great-grandsons, Zach, Noah, and Asher DaSilva. She also is survived by step-son, Candido Gallegos, wife, Frances, and grandsons, Donald and Anthony Gallegos, wife, Michele and great granddaughter, Areya all of Salt Lake City, UT.

Lydia will join her husband at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, N.M. A private service for immediate family members will be held in Albuquerque.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Lydia's name can be made to the National Hispanic Cultural Center, sent to the attention of Tey Nunn at 1701 4th Street SW, Albuquerque, NM 87102.

RIP

Don Gallegos

July 5, 2016

I had the pleasure to work with Mrs Gallegos and remember her sweet smile, her strong faith in God and her ladylike mannerisms. She never left without having her jewelry on and never let me go without thanking me at least several times. My condolences to her family that she talked so lovingly about. May she rest in peace.
