Frederick Keen Obituary

Keen, Frederick K. MD

Frederick K Keen, MD, passed away in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Tuesday, November 1, 2016, at the age of 69.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Rosalie, and his brother, Phillip.

He is survived by his wife, Kay (Karine), his son Tony, daughter Sarah and her husband Caleb, brothers Marc and Stephen; and sister Susan; as well as his mother-in-law Joan, and brothers-in-law Bruce, Gordon, and Douglas.

Fred was born in Michigan City, Ind., and graduated from Isaac C. Elston High School. He received a Bachelor's from Indiana University, and went on to do research into the role of hormone receptors in breast cancer, first at IU and then at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, Germany, where he met his wife Kay. They married in 1984 in Tiverton, England.

When Fred was offered the opportunity to attend medical school at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, he didn't hesitate. He graduated with his MD in 1980, then moved to Pittsburgh where he trained in Anesthesiology and joined the world-renowned Liver Transplant Team at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He became board-certified in Anesthesiology in 1993 and moved to Albuquerque in 1996 to lead the Liver Transplant Anesthesia Team at UNM. During his tenure at the university, he became an associate professor and held a number of hospital appointments, including Medical Director of the Operating Rooms, Chief of Anesthesia Clinical Operations, and Chief of Staff. His passion was teaching and mentoring residents, nurse anesthetists, and medical students; and he received the Dean's Award of Distinction for academic years 1998-1999 and 2000-2001. Fred spent the last few years of his career in private practice in Colorado, but he and his family returned to Albuquerque to live following his retirement in 2012.

Fred was a devoted father and loving husband, and an avid athlete and outdoorsman. He played basketball and football in High School, hiked and skied in the Austrian Alps, and became a hunter and fisherman in New Mexico. He was a proud member of the NRA and supporter of the Republican Party.

He will be missed.
