Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 in La Chapelle de Martin & Castille in Lafayette, for Sr. Gabriella Bertrand, MHS, the former Georgeanna Bertrand , who died on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Bethany MHS Health Care Center at the age of 92. The Very Reverend Chester C. Arceneaux, VF, Rector of Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, will be the celebrant of the funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Georgeanna, the daughter of the late Charles and Electa Boone Bertrand, was born on December 1, 1925 in Opelousas, LA. She attended Prairie Ronde Elementary in Prairie Ronde, LA and Lawtell High School in Lawtell, LA. She received a BA in Education from then USL (presently ULL) in Lafayette, LA and M.Ed.in Administration and Supervision from Our Lady of the Lake College, San Antonio, TX. Entering the Sisters of the Most Holy Sacrament in 1942, she professed her Perpetual Vows in 1947. At the time of her death she was in her 75th year of Religious Life. Sister Gabriella spent 32 years in Education Ministry, 28 years as a primary grade teacher and 4 years as a middle school teacher. Her ministry brought her to schools in Louisiana: St. Michael, (Crowley); St. Maurice, (New Orleans); Our Lady of Fatima, (Lafayette); St. Joseph, (Gretna); in Alabama: Blessed Sacrament, (Birmingham); and in Mississippi at Our Lady of Victories, (Pascagoula). After retiring from teaching, for the next 20 years Sister Gabriella worked in the MHS Altar Bread Department, was Coordinator of the Motherhouse and Maintenance Supervisor for all the MHS residences in Lafayette. In March of 2006 she moved to Bethany Nursing Home in Lafayette, LA. Sister Gabriella was an extremely talented and creative individual. Besides being an excellent teacher she was a great cook, seamstress and upholsterer. More importantly, she was the kindest and most faithful person you ever wanted to meet. She had a wonderful sense of humor, was selfless, compassionate and had a caring and gentle spirit. She was gifted with the ability of making everyone feel so special. Sister Gabriella had a great love for Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament which was evident throughout her 75 years of Religious Life. She will be missed by all who loved her. She is survived by many loving nieces and nephews, numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews and her Religious Family, the Sisters of the Most Holy Sacrament. She was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters, Anna Belle Bertrand, Lena Rae Bertrand, Marina Bertrand, Vernice Prevost, Lou Anna Ledoux and Sr. Anna Lee Bertrand, MHS and three brothers Abner, Hilman and Hilton Bertrand. Visitation for Sister Gabriella will be held Wednesday, January 24, 2018 from 9:00 AM until Mass time at Martin & Castille Funeral Home, Downtown, with a Rosary Service at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow the Mass at Calvary Cemetery in Lafayette. The MHS Sisters wish to thank Dr. Glen Mire and the staff at Bethany for the excellent care Sister Gabriella received.
