Clara W. Patterson, 71
Beloved mother and grandmother
Clara W. Patterson, 71, passed away Monday, June 7, 2010, in El Paso. She was a longtime resident of Alamogordo. She was born Oct. 3, 1938, in Jonesville, La., to the late Israel and Roberta Washington. She married the love of her life, O'Neal Patterson, on Dec. 1, 1958.
Clara was a caring and loving person who became the second mother to Anthony Codilla and Richard Patterson. She grew up in a Christian home and was taught as a child that you should always do unto others as you wish others to do unto you. Even during her illness, she found time to reach out to someone who was in need.
Survivors include her son, Anthony Wayne Patterson (Lisa), of Alamogordo; daughters Zenetta Michelle Jackson (Allen), of Willingboro, N.J., and Lisa D. Patterson, of Chicago; grandchildren Shantel B. Patterson, Shaylynn T. Patterson, Anthony W. Codilla Jr. (Shawna), Richard D'Wayne Patterson and Andre Jamall Jackson; six great-grandchildren; three stepchildren; sisters-in-law Rosa Lee and Geneva Paterson; and godson, Royal Traye Blaine (Sara).
Clara is also survived by her mother Roberta B. Washington, of Dallas; brother Israel Washington, of Oakland, Calif.; sisters Gladys Washington (Stanford), of Dallas; Martha White and Sara Brewington of Goldsboro, N.C.; Mary Washington of Jena, La., and Shirley Atkins of Oakland; a host of nieces and nephews; special friends Mrs. Annette Brock, Michelle Shipe and Kim Davis; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Clara was preceded in death by her husband, O'Neal Patterson in 1997.
She was a devoted employee with the Alamogordo Public Schools where she retired in July of 2002. While enjoying her retirement, she also enjoyed selling Mary Kay Products, cooking, celebrating holidays together with her family and especially spending quality time with her family. Her family was her life. She was well known and respected by many people in the Alamogordo community.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 14, 2010, at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at New Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Willard Avery officiating. Interment will follow at Monte Vista Cemetery.

Anthony and family we are saddened to hear of the passing away of your mother/grandmother. It is never a pleasant feeling when a loved one leaves us behind. But we must take faith in knowing that this life is not eternal, but the next one is. It is even more joyful than the first. Beccause He who died for her on this side is waiting on the other side.
Love and Peace
