Kenneth Ray Wallgren, age 70, of Alice, Texas passed away the morning of January 6, 2018. Ken was born on February 24, 1947, the eldest of eight siblings, to Carl and Rose Marie Wallgren of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.
After graduating from Detroit Lakes High, Class of 1965, he enlisted in the United States Navy. While stationed at N.A.S. Kingsville, he met Sheryl Albers while she pursued her degree from Texas A & I University. After completing his service in the Navy, Ken was discharged and returned to Kingsville where he married Sheryl in Bishop, Texas on June 27, 1970. Ken returned to college and graduated from Texas A & I University in 1973. He started his State Farm Insurance Agency in Alice, Texas, and became a successful agent for 42 years, winning many awards and trips for his sales efforts.
Ken was a member of Living Word Fellowship and an active member of the community. He was a hard working member of the Alice Noon Lions Club. Being the Club's Tail Twister was his favorite office to hold, and if you knew Ken, you know why. He continued to serve the community as a founding member of CCA and Coyote Cooks. He was also an Alice Ambassador for the Alice Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed cooking for people, hearing their stories, and recounting his own. He loved to hunt, fish, play golf, and it did not matter if he killed anything, caught anything, or shot a great score. He just enjoyed being outside with friends and family.
He always said that his greatest pride and enjoyment was working with the scouts of Boy Scout Troop 270. He was proud of being a part of many boys' lives as they matured into young men, with many becoming Eagle Scouts, including his own boys. Ken was able to be a part of taking the troop on their camping trips, summer camps, and their High Adventure trips to Canada and Florida.
What made Ken a successful State Farm Agent was his love and compassion for his clients. They knew that whatever was needed, Ken and his staff would work to get their issue resolved because the truly cared. Vicky, Annie, and Theresa were his right hand gals, and the heart of his office. He was loyal to his staff and clients, and they, in turn, were loyal to him.
Ken is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Robert and James Wallgren, his granddaughter, Emma Faye Wallgren, and his brother-in-law Ryan Sands.
Ken is survived by his wife, Sheryl Albers Wallgren; son, John Carl Wallgren (Jennifer) of Alice and their children, Kyler and Carlee; son Eric Hunter Wallgren (Jenny) of Johnson City; mother-in-law Bernadette Shafer of Bishop; brothers, Douglas (Michealle) of Osseo, Minnesota, Roger (Theresa) of Moorhead, Minnesota, Daniel (Sheila) of New Braunfels, Texas; sisters, Elaine Ruscheinsky (John) of Spokane, Washington, Christine Sands of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; and sister-in-law Janet Wallgren. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
We are so thankful and appreciative of the love and care that Ken received the past two years at Meridian Care and from River City Hospice. You will always have our utmost respect and admiration for the jobs that you do as you serve others.
