Barnes, Olan Owen 9/1/1947 - 10/11/2020 Ann Arbor, Michigan Olan Owen Barnes, Jr, age 73, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2020. Olan was born on September 1, 1947, the only child of Olan Owen and Frances Martha (Joseph) Barnes and was raised in Flint, Michigan. Early in Olan's childhood, his father unexpectedly passed away leaving his mother, Frances, and Olan, age 9, to look after one another creating a strong bond. After graduating from St. John Vianney Catholic High School in Flint, Olan attended Eastern Michigan University. He received a Bachelor's of Science degree and shortly thereafter obtained a Master's Degree in guidance and counseling. After Olan met Linda L. Huwer in Detroit, Michigan he quickly realized that he wanted to spend his life with her. The two married on April 3, 1971 in Ohio and settled in Detroit, Michigan. Olan took a position with the State of Michigan as a Disability Examiner and would enjoy over 30 years in this role retiring in 2003. After retirement, in 2006, Olan was diagnosed with end-stage liver cancer and was a recipient of a liver transplant-a gift he was forever grateful for as it provided him the opportunity to watch his grandchildren grow. His family fondly called him "Miracle Dad" as his recovery was an unexpected blessing. During his life, Olan was a member of the Jaycee and Lions Club where he enjoyed local fellowship with other members. He was also a member of the UAW Local 6000, which represented State employees, and took an active leadership role within the union which created many lifelong friendships. Olan is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Linda Barnes; his children, Olan Patrick (Lindsay) Barnes and Rebecca Barnes-Wieger; his grandchildren, Jack Wieger, Allison Wieger, Lucas Barnes, and twins, Brooke and Matthew Barnes. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Gift of Life Michigan, an organization that Olan actively supported and volunteered with in the years following his liver transplant. A rotating visitation will take place on Thursday, October 15, 2020, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, at the Nie Family Funeral Home, 3767 W. Liberty Road, Ann Arbor, 48103. Please remember that masks are required to attend and social distancing is encouraged.
