Place, Robert Merrill 6/6/1952 - 11/17/2020 Naples, FL Robert Merrill Place, age 68, passed away in Naples, FL on Tuesday, November 17, 2020. Bob was born in Ann Arbor, MI on June 6, 1952. He was a 12-year student at St. Thomas Catholic School, and a member of the graduating Class of 1970. A resident of Naples, FL for the past 25 years, Bob enjoyed running and spending time at the beach. He had a great sense of humor and easily engaged everyone he met in conversation. An avid softball player in his younger years, Bob was always tuned-in to the Detroit Tigers and later, the Florida Marlins. Football and basketball seasons were devoted to the Michigan Wolverines. Bob is survived by two sons, Brian (Chris Johnson) Place and Sean (Robin Engle) Place of Seattle, WA; two sisters, Maureen (Mike) Watassek of Ann Arbor, MI and Dianna (Tim) Kellman of Ypsilanti, MI; one brother, Tom (Amy) Place of Orlando, FL; five nieces/nephews and four great-nieces/nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Roger and Merna Place, and one niece, Lauren Watassek. Memorial services will be held at a later date with interment at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery, Ann Arbor, MI. Memorial contributions in Bob's memory may be made to the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation ( or to a charity of your choice.

He was a great guy and a kind and gentle soul . I went to school with him for twelve years. We played on the same little league team that his father coached . I enjoyed his company and I am sure he is with the lord right now. Rest in peace Bob you will be missed
