Jane T. vom Saal
AGE: 95 • Whiting
Jane Talmadge Towle vom Saal, a longtime resident of The Pines at Whiting, died in Whiting, NJ, on July 30, 2017. She was 95 years old.
She was born on October 7, 1921 in Derby, CT, where she grew up. After graduating from high school as salutatorian, she lived and worked in New York City for four years. In 1944, she married her husband of 60 years, W. Rudolf vom Saal, and they moved to Staten Island, NY. They lived there for over 50 years before moving to Whiting, NJ, in 1996. While raising three children on Staten Island, Jane was active in her community, serving on the executive board of the PTA for many years as well as serving as a nature guide at Davis Wildlife Refuge and High Rock Park on Staten Island for ten years, and volunteering at the Staten Island Museum. She was active in Immanuel Union Church and was a charter member of the Westerleigh chapter of AARP. She was an avid nature lover, enjoying all things outdoors. She especially loved birds and trees. She could identify numerous birds by their looks and songs, and also identify trees by their bark as well as their leaves. She also loved visiting her sister and relatives in Connecticut, as well as visiting the vom Saal family estate in Sharon Springs, NY.
Jane was predeceased by her husband, her sisters, Marjorie Towle and Mary Elizabeth Smith, and her brother, James Towle. She is survived by her three children, Susan Decker and her husband, Edward of Whiting, NJ, Robert vom Saal and his wife, Lorraine of Severna Park, MD and Walter vom Saal and his partner, Suzanne Miller of Oneonta, NY, as well as her 6 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Jane was very lucky to spend her last years in the Assisted Living section of The Pines at Whiting. The excellent care provided by The Pines made her last years as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to High Rock Park or Davis Wildlife Refuge via The City Parks Foundation in New York, or to a nonprofit organization of your choice that supports nature, Hospice Care, Alzheimer's Research or to The Pines at Whiting.
