Rich Fronapfel

Allenhurst - Rich Fronapfel, a resident of Allenhurst for the past 48 years, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 5th. A lifelong New Jersey native, he was born in January 1943 in Elizabeth, NJ and was raised in Deal, NJ. He graduated from Asbury Park High School in 1961 and earned BA and Master's degrees at Monmouth College. He served for six years in the United States Army Reserves out of Fort Hancock, NJ. He was a proud and dedicated volunteer fireman for the Deal Fire Company for almost 60 years where he also served on numerous committees. Rich had many professions. He retired as a salesman at Sears in Ocean Township and owned and operated Rich's Beer Line Cleaning. Among other jobs, he worked security at Monmouth Race Park, was a substitute teacher in the Shore area and worked for the Railway Express Agency. He enjoyed working on cars, having a High Life on his front porch or at one of his favorite local haunts, reading the newspaper daily cover to cover, trips to Atlantic City, and drives along Ocean Avenue. Camping was an activity he enjoyed with his family and friends, as well as through his active involvement in his sons' scouting activities. A man of understated wit and wisdom, he was also a pillar of stoic strength for his family during challenging times. His devotion in caring for his wife during her last years was inspirational. Rich was predeceased by his sweetheart Jersey Girl and wife of 51 years, Denny, their infant son Thomas and his parents Cliff and Fran. He is survived by his son Richard Jr. (Oakhurst, NJ and NYC), his son Brian (wife Stacy) and his adored grand-daughters, Julia Lyla and Abigail Lucy (Mountainside, NJ), and his daughter Laura (Chicago, IL). He is also survived by his brother Stephen (wife Joan and their children Joe and Maria) (Millington, NJ), and sister Barbara (her late husband Dave and their children Rachel and Nick) (Torrance, CA), as well as numerous loving relatives from his wife's family, and countless friends from all areas of his life. A viewing will be held on Thursday, January 14th from 10am to 11:30am at the Buckley Funeral Home, 509 Second Ave, Asbury Park, NJ. Immediately following the viewing there will be a brief outside ceremony by the Deal Fire Company at 11:30am at Buckley's, followed by internment in St. Catherine's Cemetery, Sea Girt, NJ. The family plans to hold a remembrance gathering for Rich and Denny post-pandemic. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Deal Fire Company #2, 120 Brighton Ave., Deal, NJ 07723 would be appreciated. Please follow occupancy of 50 people at one time, wear a mask and practice social distancing at the visitation in the funeral home. For condolences, please visit www.buckleyfuneralhome.net

Laura was my roommate in college. I remember the kindness her Dad Rich extended to me when we first met and each subsequent time he came to a Bucknell event to support his daughter. He was a kind man who raised an exceptional daughter.

To Rich’s children and grand children. I attended Deal School and APHS with Rich. In addition to always being a gentleman, he was probably the smartest guy in our class. Sincere condolences to his family.
