My goodness, my husband and I were just telling a story about him. I was a cub reporter and newspaper editor in Chatham when he was made chief. Our layout artists somehow mixed up a story about this decorated Viet Nam veteran achieving the status of chief with a story about a 106 year old barber in the next town. What should have been the most wonderful news article about Chief Scherer's career jumped from his heroics in a trench in Viet Nam to recounting how at how, born in Sicily in 1906, he was still cutting local hair. When the paper came out, I wanted to die, and steeled myself for the obligatory apology phone call. When I called Chief Scherer, he couldn't even talk to me, he was laughing so hard. He was just the most wonderful guy and even though it's years later after I knew him, I'm so sorry to heard of his passing. Very fond memories of him and the PD in Chatham.

Just heard about Bob's passing from our class communications chief. As a member of CHS60, I am sorry to hear of the passing of a classmate. We had good years, in that era of rock n ' roll, V-8s, and quiet politics. My prayers for the family.
