Roger Halstead is the oldest of my closest two cousins, Roger and Chad Halstead. Through all the 1940's and the early 1950's, my mother, Matilda Messer, who was Rogers Aunt Til, our Uncle George Messer and Aunt Helen Messer, myself and my two brothers, Don and Bob, would travel on many Sundays, holidays and special celebrations throughout the year to Woodbridge to visit Aunt Elsie, Uncle Herb and all our Halstead cousins as they were or were born into the family.
Picnics, celebrations, Sunday night suppers, cards for the adults and games for the children were enjoyed by all. When we were not in Woodbridge, the Halsteads would often come to East Orange.
My memories of Roger and those days are very pleasant. He was always joyful and happy. Roger and my brother Don, the two oldest of the cousins led us in fun and games.
In the summer, the Halsteads and Cooneys traded off for a week or two with each other. Roger and Don would pair up in Woodbridge. Chad and I would spend a week or two in East Orange. Then we would reverse locations for another vacation together. Our families were very close in those days.
Now, my condolences go out to Joan, Rogers wife, and to their children and grandchildren. To all Roger's siblings, my cousins, who, with my brothers will deeply miss him, I send my heartfelt best wishes.
May Roger forever enjoy the fruits of his labors.
