Richard Johnson Obituary


Richard L. Johnson was born February 16, 1918, in Weaverville, CA, son of Lloyd G. and Elizabeth H. Johnson. He died December 24, 2017 in Williams, CA.

He was predeceased in death by 3 wives, Muriel Marie Cannon, Merrie Lou Salas and Claire Wheeler Morgan, and one daughter, Victoria Johnson Sulski.

He is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth Johnson, Ellen J. Norquist, and Caroline Johnson.

He loved learning and earned his AB from UC Berkeley, 1939 and his MD from UC San Francisco, 1942. He proudly served in WW II, US Army M.C. 1943-46; he was honorably discharged as a Major in the reserves in 1952. His passion was medicine. He was in solo practice in Sacramento from 1949-88 and served as Medical Director of the Sacramento County Primary Care Clinics from 1988-91 and as Medical Director of the County's Department of Corrections, 1991-93. He was twice appointed to the Citizens Advisory Committee on Aging by Governors Goodwin Knight and Edwin G. Brown. He was appointed and elected to attend several White House Conferences on Aging and to the State Board of Medical Examiners. He served as President of the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society in 1978, and Editor of the SSVMS journal of SSV Medicine for 22 years. After his retirement in 1994, he moved to Colusa, was active in fraternal organizations, county health department committees and the Colusa County Historical Society where he served as editor of their journal, Wagon Wheels.

A memorial will be held at 11 AM on February 16, 2018 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 642 5th St., Colusa, CA, 95932, 530-458-2470, with a reception to follow.
