My wife (Pamela) worked in the Biology Department from 1972 to 1975 and had the pleasure of working closely with Dr. Chen. I was a student in Biology (69-73) and graduate student in Microbiology (73-75) and had Dr. Chen for several courses and always enjoyed him greatly. He was a very good teacher, mentor, and exceptional individual. We will keep him and your family in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Judie, Frankie and Winnie,

Your Dad was my second father. I was one of your Dad's graduate students at SDSU (1981-1983) and he is the reason why I now have the career that I have in plant biotech. He is the one that told me I could do it. He is the one the showed me how to do it. I last saw him in 2015 when I was back in Sioux Falls. We met at the butterfly garden and sat on the same bench in his obituary photo. We also went over to his house and talked and then went out for dinner. I told him how lucky I was to have him as my Major Professor. He corrected me. He told me how lucky he was to have me as his student. I will always remember these words. Such a special man to me and such a special father to you. There is a very bright star that just entered heaven this past Sunday.

May the God of love bring you and your family peace during this difficult time.

My sympathies to the family of Dr. Chen. He was one of my favorite professors when I was pursuing my bachelors degree at SDSU. I very fondly remember the courses I took from him. He had a way to make topics both interesting and fun.
