Barbara Coffey Obituary

Barbara Jean Coffey

Barbara Jean Coffey, 80, passed away February 7, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls, SD.

Barbara Jean Berkelo, daughter of Martin Nikolai and Pearl Marian Elvera (Anderson) Berkelo was born June 24, 1936 in Madison, SD. She grew up in Madison and received her education there.

Barbara was united in marriage with Harry W. Coffey on May 25, 1953; the couple made their home in Clovis, NM where Harry was stationed at Clovis Air Force Base. After Harry's discharge from the service the family moved back to Sioux Falls, SD in October of 1955. Barbara worked full time as a nurse aide in the evening and during the day took care of her children. She graduated from Southeast Area with a Nursing Degree in 1983. She continued to work for Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls under the title "Sarge Coffey". Barbara retired in April of 1997.

Barbara was a member of the Moose Lodge, PTA President, First Lutheran Church, 4-H, helped her husband, Harry, with the Boy Scout Troup, taking care of Harold and Kay Lackey and helping in the Lackey School. She helped with many an "Ice Cream Social" at Jane Addams Elementary and shared her strong beliefs in an "A+ Attitude". Barbara enjoyed dancing, camping, gardening, auctions, baking and collecting odd items. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and some of her greatest joys were the care she gave to her residents at the nursing home.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Judy Cross, Mike (Sara Jo) Coffey, Dawn Coffey, Kimberly (Steven) Bergeson, Michelle (John) Blair, and Stacy (Jim) Johnson; 20 grandchildren; 17 ½, ½ great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Delores (Pat) Doyle Linda (Mark) Kimmel and Marty (Jeannie) Berkelo, many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends; along with her many co-workers and residents at the Good Samaritan Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry and her parents, brothers and sisters, Marlene (Bob) Porter and David Berkelo.

Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Saturday, February 11, 2017 at First Lutheran Church. Visitation will be 5:00-9:00pm Friday, February 10, 2017 at Heritage Funeral with family present to greet friends from 6:00-8:00pm.

I remember both Harry and Barb when I was a volunteer at the Good Sam Center. Nice, nice couple. Barb couldn't talk but Harry spoke for her. My prayers are with the family and be sure to keep the memories going for many years. That is a needed part of healing.

Barbara has joined Harry, once again, to dance to their song "May I Have this Dance for the Rest of My Life"! Love and peace to the family as they fondly remember 'the dance'.

Sympathy to all of the Coffey family. I was privileged to work with Barb at the Good Sam Center for many years. What a wonderfully devoted nurse she was. Then when Barb & Harry chose the Center as their home I was privileged to see what a true marriage with dedication & love looks like.

So sad to here of sarge's passing. I worked with her from 1989-1994. She was my true inspiration to go to nursing school. She gave me a nursing referral when I was entering nursing school. And she was all around a wonderful person. She will be truly missed!
